작가 이청준은 1960년대에 작품 활동을 시작해 2000년대에 이르기까지 꾸준하게 작품 활동을 해나간 성실한 작가였다. 그는 자신이 소설가라는 뚜렷한 자의식 아래에서 인간의 자기 존재에 관해 천착해나가면서, 동시에 당대의 현실에도 예민하게 반응했다. 본고는 “고향”과 “소설”로 대표되는 두 축의 대립과 조응이라는 이청준에 관한 기존의 시각들에 대체로 동의하면서도 1980년 이후 작가의 문학 세계가 그러한 개념으로 설명될 수만은 없다는 지점에 주목한다. 다시 말해 그가 자신의 체험을 바탕으로 고향을 소재로 한 여러 작품과 소설가 자신을 전면에 내세우는 많은 작품들을 동시에 써나간 것은 사실이지만 그것만으로 온전히 이청준 문학의 세계가 이해되지는 않는다는 것이다. 따라서 1980년대 이전의 작품들을 이청준 문학의 정수로 인식하는 대다수의 연구 시각을 비판적으로 바라보고 이후 이청준이 걸어 나간 1980년 이후의 도정을 재평가한다. 시대와 유리된 문학주의자로서의 이청준이 아니라 당대의 현실 문제와 이청준의 작품을 함께 놓고 읽어 나갈 때, 작가가 드러내는 미묘한 변화를 읽어낼 수 있기 때문이다. 『당신들의 천국』으로 대표되는 이청준 문학의 한 경향, 즉 특정한 ‘모델’을 등장시켜 현실을 알레고리적으로 그려내는 이청준 특유의 방식은 1980년대에 이르러 더 이상 작동되지 못했다. 이청준 문학에서 직접적으로 발견하기는 어렵지만 오히려 그래서 더 주목되는 것이 1980년 광주항쟁에 관한 것이다. 1980년대에 씌어진 여러 작품들에서 이청준의 현실 인식은 더 치열해졌다고 할 수 있는데 특히 ‘고향’과 ‘소설’, 그리고 ‘현실’의 세 꼭짓점 가운데서 어떤 제3의 태도를 취하려는 방식에 주목할 수 있다. 참여와 도피라는 폭압적인 두 가지 선택항에서 벗어나 소설을 통해 현실에 응전해보려는 이청준 특유의 태도는 이후 그의 작품세계를 형성하는 중요한 토대가 되었다.
Lee Chung-joon was a steady writer who started his work in the 1960s and continued his work until the 2000s. He was sensitive to the realities of contemporariness, as he penetrated human beings under the obvious self-consciousness that he was a novelist. This paper generally agrees with existing views of confrontation and correspondence, represented by “home” and “novel,” but notes that the writer's literary world after 1980 cannot be explained with such a structure. In other words, it is true that he wrote several works based on his experience and many works that put the novelist himself at the forefront, but that alone does not fully understand the world of Lee Chung-joon's literature. Therefore, I critically look at the majority of research views that understand works before the 1980s as the core of Lee Chung-jun's literature, and reevaluate the post-1980 road that Lee Chung-jun walked. This is because the author can read the subtle changes revealed by the writer when he reads about the problems of reality of contemporariness and Lee Chung-joon's work together, not Lee Chung-joon as a literary-ist. Lee Chung-joon's unique style of portraying reality in an allegory way by featuring a specific “model,” which is represented by Your Heaven, no longer worked in the 1980s. It is difficult to find directly in Lee Chung-jun's literature, but rather, a more important point is about the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. In various works written in the 1980s, Lee Chung-jun's perception of reality became fiercer, especially in the way he tried to take a third attitude among the three vertices of “home,” “novel,” and “reality.” Lee Chung-joon's unique attitude to respond to reality through novels, away from the two tyrannical options of participation and escape, later became an important foundation for forming the world of his work.
