‘귀엽다’의 의미 확장 양상

Aspects of Semantic Extension of ‘kwiyepta’

이 연구의 목적은 단기 통시적인 관점에서 1940년대부터 2010년대까지의 신문 말뭉치를 대상으로 ‘귀엽다’의 의미 변화의 양상을 시기별로 살펴보는 것이다. 먼저, 1946년부터 2014년까지의 동아일보 코퍼스를 대상으로 ‘귀엽다’의 대상 명사와 결합 용언 분석을 통해 의미 확장의 특성을 살펴보았다. 분석결과, ‘귀엽다’의 대상이 되는 명사 범주는 [사람](57.52%) > [추상](18.76%) > [무생물](12.33%) > [동물](10.25%) > [식물](1.14%) 순이었다. ‘귀엽다’와 함께 사용되는 대상 명사는 ‘아이의 모습/행동 > 성인의 행동 > 노인의 행동’으로 확대되었으며, ‘사람의 모습/행동 > 동물의 모습/행동 > 식물의 모습> 생물의 모습 > 추상적 대상의 성질’로 일반적 단어의 의미 확장 방향과 동일하였다. 다음으로, 결합용언을 중심으로 살펴본 결과 ‘귀엽다’는 ‘받다, 하다, 독차지하다, 보이다, 생기다’와 전 시기에 걸쳐 고르게 결합하여 ‘귀여움을 받다, 귀여움을 독차지하다, 귀엽게/귀여워 보이다’ 등의 패턴으로 쓰였다. ‘사랑스럽다, 깜찍하다, 발랄하다’ 등은 1980년대 이후부터 결합 빈도가 높아지며 ‘섹시하다’는 2000년대부터 사용되는데, 이는 ‘귀엽다’가 성인의 행동 특성을 의미하는 것으로 확장되었기 때문이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine pattern of changes in the meaning of the adjective ‘kwiyepta’ as short diachrony. First, the characteristics of meaning extension were examined through analysis of the target nouns and combination verbs/adjectives of ‘kwiyepta’ for the newspaper corpus. Second, the noun categories as followed, ‘kwiyepta’ were [people](57.52%) > [abstract](18.76%) > [inanimate object](12.33%) > [animal](10.25%) > [plant](1.14%). The target noun used with ‘kwiyepta’ was extended to ‘child’s appearance/behavior > adult’s behavior > old man’s behavior’ and it was the same as the direction of expansion of the meaning of general words as ‘human appearance/behavior > animal’s figure/behavior > plant’s appearance > living creature > nature of an abstract object’. Finally, as a result of examining the combination verbs/adjectives, ‘kwiyepta’ was evenly combined with ‘patta, hata, tokchacihata, poita, sayngkita’ throughout the period. And it was used as a pattern such as ‘kwiyewumul patta, kwiyewumul tokchacihata, kwiyepkey poita, kwiyewe poita’ etc. ‘seyksihata’ has been used since the 2000s, because ‘kwiyepta’ has been extended to mean behavioral characteristics of adults.
