Ataraxia and Nietzsche’s dangerous life

니체 철학이 고대 회의주의와, 특히 피론주의와 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있음은 주지의 사실이다. 니체는 독단주의를 파괴하고자 하였으며, 이런 측면에서 피론 주의의 논변을 적극적으로 수용한다. 니체의 관점주의는 피론주의자들의 트로 펜의 반복이다. 그러나 실천적인 측면에서 니체는 아타락시아를 추구하는 피론 주의자들을 삶에 치쳐버린 자들이라고 혹독하게 비판한다. 마음의 평정을 향유 하는 안락한 삶에 맞서 니체는 위험한 삶을 살 것을 촉구한다. 그러나 섹스투스 엠피리쿠스라면 이런 비판에 곧장 이의를 제기할 것이다. 그는 니체가 삶을 불 행으로 이끄는 무모한 독단주의자라고 마찬가지로 비판할 것이다. 양자는 정면 으로 충돌한다. 나는 이 글에서 양자가 삶의 방식과 관련해서 어떤 점에서 일치 하고 또 대립하는지를 비교하고 분석하려 한다. 니체가 기리고 있는 위험한 삶 은 그의 독특한 힘에의 의지론에 기초하고 있다. 피론주의자들은 힘에의 의지론 을 조준하여 여러 회의적 논변들을 전개할 것이지만, ‘위험한 삶’에 대한 니체의 정당성은 논리적인 인식론적 지평에서가 아니라 그의 경험적 진실성의 차원에 서 확보된다. 섹스투스 엠피리쿠스와 니체가 벌일 만한 논박들을 상정함으로써 나는 니체가 어떻게 피론주의자의 공격을 피할 수 있으며, 동시에 왜 니체의 ‘위 험한 삶’이 유서 깊은 전통적인 철학과 결별한 새로운 철학적 삶의 길일 수 있는 지를 보이고자 한다.

It is well known that Nietzsche’s philosophy is very linked with ancient skepticism, especially pyrrhonism. Actively embracing the skeptical arguments of pyrrhonists, Nietzsche sought to destroy all kinds of dogmatism. His perspectivism is just a repetition of the pyrrhonist trofen(forms of argument). In practical terms, however, Nietzsche severely criticizes the pyrrhonists as weak exhausted men pursuing ataraxia. Nietzsche calls for a dangerous life against a comfortable pyrrhonists who are trying to enjoy the tranquility of mind. But Sextus Empiricus would immediately challenge this criticism. He would equally criticize Nietzsche as a reckless dogmatist who leads life to anxiety. Both collide head-on. In this article, I will compare and analyze how the both agree and confront each other in terms of the way of life. Nietzsche’s dangerous life is based on his unique theory, will to power. The pyrrhonists obviously would develop various skeptical arguments to disclose the weakness in the theory of will to power. But Nietzsche’s justification for ‘dangerous life’ could be secured not in logical epistemological horizons, but his personal empirical truthfulness dimension. By constructing plausible disputes between Sextus Empiricus and Nietzsche, I would show how Nietzsche could avoid the pyrrhonist attack and why Nietzsche’s ‘dangerous life’ be a new philosophical way of life that breaks away from old traditional philosophy.
