이 글은 20세기의 여러 정치적 신화들 가운데 고비노의 인종불평등론에 대한 카시러의 독해 방식을 논의한다. 한 세기가 이미 훌쩍 지나버린 고비노의 이론을 다시금 카시러의 목소리에 힘입어 살펴보고자 하는 것은 고비노의 이론이 서구 정치 사상사에 많은 영향을 미쳤기 때문이다. 특히 니체 사상을 비롯해 파시즘 이론에 적극적으로 개입되었다는 혐의를 여전히 받고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 맥락에서, 이 글에서 필자의 기본 관심은 고비노 이론의 파시즘과의 직접적인 관련성을 해명하고, 나아가 고비노의 인종주의 자체에 대한 해명, 고비노 이론의 니체와의 영향관계 그리고 이러한 논의를 한국 사회의 당면한 문제와 연관 시키면서 문화철학적 관점에서 반성해 보는 데 있다. 그렇기에 여기에서 적어도 필자는 한국 사회의 정치, 문화, 교육 현장에서는 여전히 고비노의 인종주의가 사멸한 것이 아니라, 잔존 내지 어떤 측면에서는 부활하고 있다는 사실을 입증하고자 한다. 이 점이 바로 이 논의의 목적이라고 할 수 있다.
This article deals with Cassirer's interpretation about Gobineaus' theory of racism which focussed on Essay on the Inequality of Human Races. Gobineaus' theory has influenced on the Western History of Political Thought. Especially, His thought has influenced on the thought of Friedrich Nietzsche(1844-1900) as well as the theory of Fascism in Germany. In this article, I will elucidate about the relation between Gobineaus' theory of racism and Fascism, and analyze Gobineaus' theory of racism in itself. In this process, I will rely on Cassirer's viewpoint, that is, Gobineau's theory does not related with the theory of Fascism. Because firstly Gobineaus' theory was an attempt to destroy all other values, and secondly there was still another obstruction in Gobineaus' way, the humanitarian and equalitarian ideas of the eighteenth century, and thirdly Gobineau was no nationalist nor was he a French patriot. Finally, I will deal with the meaning of the theory of racism in Gobineau in society of Korea according to the viewpoint of Philosophy of Culture.
