니체는 반(反) 민주주의자인가? 간단하게 보이는 이 질문에 대답하기는 예상과 달리 쉽지 않다. 그리고 이상하게도 이제까지 그 질문 자체가 제대로, 진지하게 다루어지지 않았다. 사람들은 한편으로 민주주의에 대한 그의 비판 혹은 비난을 못 보거나 못 본 체 슬쩍 옆으로 밀어놓은 채 형이상학에 대한 그의 비판을 철학사적으로 부각시켰다. 거꾸로 민주주의에 대한 그의 비판 및 그것과 직접 연결된 몇몇 문제들을 빌미로 그의 철학을 쉽게 폄하하는 사람들도 많았다. 본 연구는 민주주의에 대한 그의 비판이 일정하게 사실이며, 따라서 그의 정치철학을 그대로 따라하는 것은 매우 위험할 수 있다는 것을 인정하는 데에서 출발한다. 그리고 그 인정에서 출발할 때, 그의 정치철학은 아직도 여전히 중요한 논점을 제공할 수 있다고 믿는다. 물론 문제가 되는 부분을 그의 텍스트에서 쉽게 외과적으로 분리할 수 없다는 점이 중요하며, 또 이 점이 그의 텍스트를 정치철학적으로 읽는데 장애물로 존재한다.
Is Nietzsche enemy of democracy? Despite the simple appearance of this question, it is hard to answer it, and it has been until now not well handled. On one side, his anti-democratic words has been simply so overseen or even hidden by interpreters as to emphasize his critique of western metaphysics. On the other side, the same words has been used in order to discount and refute his whole text. I think we should acknowledge that there are some anachronical and dangerous aspects in his critique of democracy. But once these are acknowledged, his critical statements of democracy could be placed on reflective level of political philosophy. Yet another problem is waiting. The dangerous aspects of his anti-democratic words are not able to be cut off the textual structure. They belong to the same structure the ‘good’ words belong to.
