1세기 말부터 2세기 초였다. 교회는 두 세력으로 인해 갈등과 위기에 직면해 있었다. 하나는 교회를 영적 갈등 속에 빠뜨렸던 이단의 세력이었다. 또 다른 하나는 교회를 박해하였던 로마였다. 이그나티우스는 서신을 통해 교회가 갈등과 위기로부터 흔들리지 않도록 인도한다. 이때 그가 사용했던 도구가 성경이었다. 그는 ‘사도서’와 ‘복음서’ 그리고 ‘예언서’를 인용하며 갈등과 위기로부터 벗어날 수 있는 길을 제시한다. 신앙과 신학 그리고 목회적 성격을 가지고 있는 그의 서신은 바울과 베드로의 가르침을 강조하는 특징을 가지고 있다. 그의 서신은 사변적이지 않으며, 성경을 중심으로 하고 있는 변증서에 가까웠다. 이그나티우스의 서신에 대한 성경 신학적 접근은 그의 서신이 가지는 특징을 더욱 깊이 있게 고찰하게 한다. 그는 자신이 전달하려는 메시지에 대해 성경을 매우 효과적으로 사용했던 교부였다. 특히 요한복음은 크게 두 가지에 중심을 두고 사용된다. (1) 그리스도의 신성과 인성에 대한 변증이다. (2) 이단들의 거짓된 교리를 반박하기 위해서다. 이그나티우스의 서신에 대한 성경 신학적 연구는 우리로 하여금 그를 더욱 분명히 알아가는 길을 제시한다. 그의 신앙을 보게 되며, 진리의 파수꾼과 같은 그의 모습을 발견하게 한다. 또한 성경 신학적 접근에 따른 연구는 그의 목회적 측면을 우리에게 적용하는 유익을 얻게 한다.

It was from the end of the 1st century to the beginning of the 2nd century. The church was facing conflict and crisis due to the two forces. One was the power of heresy that plunged the church into spiritual conflict. Another was Rome, which persecuted the church. Ignatius guides the church not to be shaken from conflicts and crises through his letters. The instrument he used at this time was the Bible. He suggests a way out of conflict and crisis by quoting the letters of the ‘Apostles’, the ‘Gospels’, and the ‘Prophets’. His epistles, which are of faith, theology, and pastoral character, are characterized by emphasizing the teachings of Paul and Peter. His correspondence was not speculative, but more like an apologetics centered on the Bible. The biblical theological approach to Ignatius' epistles allows us to examine the characteristics of his epistles more deeply. He was the Father who used the Bible very effectively for the message he was trying to convey. In particular, the Gospel of John is mainly used focusing on two things. (1) It is an apologetic of the divinity and humanity of Christ. (2) To refute the false doctrines of heresies. A biblical theological study of Ignatius' epistles gives us a way to get to know him more clearly. You will see his faith and discover his image as a keeper of the truth. In addition, a study according to the biblical theological approach has the benefit of applying his pastoral aspect to us.
