초기 대구·경북지역 장로교의 전도부인 양성과 활동

Training and Activity of Bible Women in the Early Presbyterian Church in Daegu, Kyoung-Book Area

초기 한국 교회의 사역 과정에서 나타나는 전도부인들의 역할과 활동은 한국교회의 성장뿐 아니라 대구·경북지역 교회의 성장에 초석이 되었다. 특히 전도부인의 다양한 활동과 희생적 헌신은 대구·경북지역 교회의 부흥과 성장을 이끌었을 뿐 아니라, 지역 사회에도 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 그러나 이러한 공헌에도 불구하고 대구·경북지역 교회는 전도부인들의 공적을 배제한 채, 남성 지도자들을 중심으로 역사를 서술해 왔다. 따라서 본 연구는 초기 대구·경북지역 교회에서 장로교의 전도부인이 어떻게 양성되어 활동하였는지를 밝히고 또 대구-경북지역 교회의 부흥과 성장에 어떻게 기여했는지 살펴보았다. 전도부인은 한국의 언어와 풍습에 익숙하지 못하여 독자적인 선교활동을 할 수 없었던 선교사들을 대신하여, 자신들이 이해한 기독 복음의 진리를 전파하는 역할을 하였다. 그들은 네비우스 선교정책 프로그램을 따라 비정규과정인 부인사경회, 부인성경반, 성경연구반과 정규과정인 성경학교에서 발굴되어 훈련과 양육을 받고 전도부인으로 임명받아 활동하였다. 전도부인은 부인성경반을 운영하고 부인야학교와 사경회를 통한 교육활동을 실시하여 생활을 개선시키고, 여성의 문맹퇴치와 여성 계몽운동에도 일정한 영향을 끼쳤다. 또 그들은 성경판매 활동, 순회전도, 해외전도를 통해 기독교의 복음을 전하는 전도활동을 전개하였다. 그들은 각 지방을 순회하며 상심한 교인들을 심방하여 위로하고, 개 교회 내에 부인전도회를 조직하고 지도하여 부흥시켰으며, 교회가 없는 곳에 복음을 전파하여 교회를 설립했다. 이들은 충분한 임금을 받지 못하여 경제적으로 어려운 가운데서도 희생적인 봉사와 헌신으로 대구·경북지역 교회를 부흥시키고 성장시키는데 원동력이 되었다.

In the early Korean church ministry, the role and activity of Bible Women became a cornerstone of church growth in the Daegu, Kyoung-Book area and broadly supported Korean church growth. Their various roles and sacrificial services lead to church growth in the Daegu and they also influenced in social life in the area. However, their contribution to local churches and society had been excluded from historical recording that was mainly focused on male leaders’ work. Therefore, this paper will reveal how Presbyterian churches in the early church in the area trained Bible Women as well as what important roles they had played in contributing to the local church revitalization and growth in the area. They played a role in spreading the gospel that they received from foreign missionaries who were not familiar with Korean traditions. Bible Women were selected from various groups including the Non-regular Women’s Bible Class, Women’s General Class, Institute, and Regular Bible School. The selection was made according to the Nabius Mission Policy. The selected women were trained and nurtured, and then they were appointed as Bible Women. They operated the Women’s General Class and educated women, which improved their lives and also contributed to exterminating their illiteracy and the woman enlightenment movement. They were also actively involved in evangelism by participating in selling the Bible, local evangelism, and overseeing evangelism. They visited local areas and met with Christians in comforting and encouraging them. They also helped local churches by establishing the Women’s Evangelism Committee. In addition, they evangelized local areas where there were no churches and established churches. Although they faced many economic hardships due to insufficient wages, their sacrificial and devoted services became a driving force for church growth and revitalization in the Daegu, Kyoung-Buk area.
