Development and Implementation of a Platform-based inter-cultural English Teaching and Learning Model: Focusing on Culture Project

본 연구는 플랫폼 기반 상호문화적 영어 교수-학습 모형을 개발하여 실행한 후 학습자들의 수업 만족도와 언어능력 향상에 대한 인식을 분석해 학습자 중심 E-buddy 상호문화 프로젝트의 적용 가능성을 알아보려는 시도이다. 플랫폼 기반 영미문화(English/American Culture) 교과과정에 도입한 상호문화적 E-buddy 프로젝트가 학습자들의 상호작용과 의사소통을 실질적으로 활성화할 수 있었는지 분석하였다. 상호문화프로젝트를 위해 미국과 한국의 학생들을 1:1로 매칭한 18팀을 조직하였으며, 각 팀의 구성원들은 다양한 플랫폼을 통해 소통하면서 두 문화를 비교하고 분석하는 문화프로젝트를 영어로 수행하였고, 이런 과정을 통해 상호문화에 대한 인식 능력을 신장하였다. 이 수업에 대한 학생들의 만족도와 효과를 분석하기 위해 정량적 및 정성적 방법-구글 설문지, 면담, 수업 관찰, 성찰 보고서-을 사용하였다. 연구결과, 다양한 플랫폼을 활용한 문화프로젝트가 학습자의 학습 동기 및 언어능력 향상에 상당한 도움을 주고 목표 문화에 대한 깊은 이해와 재해석에 이바지한다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 학생들은 언어학습에서 말하기와 듣기 기능 향상에 상당한 도움을 얻었다고 인식하였으며, 팀원과 문화연구를 하고 원어민과 의사소통을 하는 과정에서 자신의 언어 실력을 재평가하고, 상호문화에 대한 재해석의 계기를 발견하였다. 이 연구의 결과는, 비대면 수업 환경에서 진행된 플랫폼 기반 상호문화 프로젝트 활동이 학습자에게 상호문화에 대한 심화된 인식을 제공하고 언어학습에서 주도성을 발휘하도록 고무시켰다는 점에서 교육학적 시사점이 크다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to develop and implement a platform-based intercultural English teaching and learning model for a real time online class (‘English/American culture’) at a Korean university. According to the intercultural language learning theories, the intercultural competence makes learners better understand the target culture and improve language abilities. By incorporating inter-cultural projects into an English & American culture course with an E-buddy project (of one Korean student and one American student as a team) on multiple online platforms, we encouraged Korean students to meet regularly with an American partner and do a collaborative culture project on a chosen topic in English. We analyzed the effects of the class with the inter-cultural project, by employing quantitative and qualitative methods: observations of classes and the culture project, a questionnaire, students’ reflection reports and interviews. The findings showed that students perceived it to be useful for an improvement of their speaking and listening skills. They were able to gain deeper insights into English/American culture and its society. In addition, the students developed certain degree of cross-cultural awareness and thereby came to a reappraisal of their own culture. In general, the students were positive about the course with the intercultural culture project in groups and found it beneficial for their language learning and intercultural understanding.
