The present research identifies some of the difficulties in translating Michel Houellebecq’s Sérotonine (2020) from French to Korean. Following a funneling process, it starts with general observations on cultural content and paratextual references. Then, close attention is paid to neologisms, equivalences as well as set expressions. In addition to providing alternative translations where mistakes were detected, three kinds of recommendations are put forward in the conclusion: a more extensive use of footnotes to inform Korean readers about cultural nuances; a more consistent use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries to distinguish the new imagery created by Houellebecq from set expressions that should not be literally translated; and the necessity to take into account literary critiques so as to upgrade the correspondence between style and substance in the Korean version.
