When one reads Eliot's early poems, he or she reads many scenes in which a narrator or character suffers from fruitless sexual desire or sexual frustration. For a long time many critics have not interpreted them as Eliot's “personal and wholly insignificant grouse against life”(Facsimile 1), but as a critical view on the spiritual sterility of twentieth century Western civilization. However, through examining his biographical facts of his painful marriage life, this essay contends that his painful marriage life, endless humility and patient love lead to his production of marvelous literary works of ingenuity.
