Growth and Quantity Characteristics by the Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) Application Method for the Development of Barley Substitute Tea Materials
This study was conducted to establish an optimal dietary sulfur application method that could increase the yield to expand the base of domestic barley substitute tea. Specifically, the methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) application method treatments of this study were divided into top dressing (TD) and basal fertilization (BF). Notably, plant height, leaf color, and Fv/Fm values were high in the basal fertilized treatment group of the tea of a study on the growth characteristics of the tillering stage before the fertilization of dietary sulfur of the tea. Furthermore, in a study of the growth characteristics observed at the harvest time according to the number of TD applications, the BF+TD3 treatment group of the tea, which had the highest number of BFs, had the maximum height and highest number of branches of 74.9 cm and 5.60 times compared to the untreated group of the tea, respectively. Also, in terms of the yield components and quality characteristics of barley, the TD+BF3 treatment group of the tea had the highest number of ears (448), and this number of ears was 28.0 % higher than that of the untreated group, the smallest. Accordingly, in terms of yield, the TD+BF3 treatment group of the tea had the most yield of 254 kg/10a, which was an increase of 16.5 % compared to the untreated group of the tea that had the lowest yield. Therefore, it will be advantageous to treat barley with TD+BF3 when growing it to achieve the best substitute tea.
