Gwang-Won SeoIn 1928, Eliot declared he was a classicist in literature, a royalist in politics, and an Anglo-Catholic in religion. However, I suppose this statement can't represent his true characteristics in the literary, political, and religious world. Therefore this thesis purposes to show that Eliot succeeded to some Romantic poets in the poems and literary theories. Also this study wishes to show that his Anglo-Catholic spirit couldn't cover his consciousness level in his later poems, especially in Four Quartets. In political thinking, though he followed the reactionary tradition, preferring monarchy, he seems to be a ideal royalist rather than an activist in reality.
