This study examines some of Eliot’s most famous critical doctrines; such as “the theory of impersonality,” “the objective correlative,” and “the dissociation of sensibility.” By scrutinizing in depth his seminal essays, “Tradition and the Individual Talent,” “The Poetry of W. B. Yeats,” “Milton I” and “Milton Ⅱ” among others, in which Eliot pronounced his radical dictums, this paper shows that, as he grows mature and senescent, manifestly Eliot denies or revises his own earlier dogmatic statements in his later critical essays while revealing great generosity, magnanimity, and proportion in his literary criticism.
