Objectives: This study aims to examine the mediating role of children’s self-regulation ability in the relationship between perceptions of parenting attitudes and elementary school children’s time consumption of online videos. Methods: A survey was conducted among 283 fifth and sixth elementary school students from City A, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Participants completed self-report questionnaires designed to assess perceptions of parenting attitudes, self-regulation ability, and online video viewing time of children. Data were analyzed based on the mediating effects between variables using SPSS Process Macro model 4. Results: First, children’s self-regulation ability mediated the relationship between fathers’ parenting attitudes and children’s video viewing time. However, fathers’ overindulgent parenting was not correlated with children’s self-regulation ability. Second, children’s self-regulation ability acted as a mediator variable in the relationship between mothers’ parenting attitudes and children’s video viewing time. Conclusions: By examining the environmental and personal factors that can help children use the appropriate online video use time, basic data for preventing various problems and side effects regarding online video use time are provided.
