「이스트 코우커」의 기원과 T. S. 엘리엇의 앵글로 가톨릭 정체성

““The Origin of East Coker” and T. S. Eliot’s Anglo-Catholic Identity.”

엘리엇은 오랜 기간에 철학과 종교의 긴 순례를 거치면서 회의와 배반 그리고 반성의 시간을 가지면서 마침내는 앵글로 가톨릭의 정체성을 가진다. 그가 영국 성공회로 개종하게 된 가장 큰 이유는 가톨릭주의만이 이런 체계 안에서 유일하고 진실로 설득력 있고 권위적인 것으로 보며 모든 세속적인 철학에 대한 잠재적인 불만족에 기인했던 것으로 회상했다. 엘리엇의 이스트 코우커 교회의 묘비명에 있는 “나의 끝에 나의 시작이 있다”는 시구는 오랜 기간 동안의 관념적이고 정신적인 고향으로 긴 여행 후에 눈에 띠지 않게 기독교를 완전히 수용한 표현이다. 세례와 견진 성사를 받은 후에 엘리엇은 두 발로 긴 여행을 막 끝마쳤을 때 편한 의자에 앉은 자신을 회상했다. 엘리엇은 “개인의 헌신에 중요한 기도와 공동체의 상당히 훈련받은 환경에서 추구되는 종교적인 공동체들의 삶에 깊이 이끌렸고 이런 종교적인 질서들은 앵글로 가톨릭에 중요한 영향을 주었다고” 말했다. 기도와 명상의 종교적인 삶과 실천하는 존경하는 공동체가 엘리엇의 이상이라는 신념은 그의 앵글로 가톨릭의 정체성을 보여준다.

Eliot and Valrie’ ashes are interred in the church, with the inscription, “In my end is my beginning.” After three hundreds years Eliot returned to the home of his forefather, Andrew Eliot, who left East Coker for the Massachusetts Bay Colony of America in 1660. Eliot received the Christian sacraments of baptism and confirmation in Holy Trinity Church at Finstock on the 29th and 30th June, 1927 that belongs to the Church of England. He was made a member of the Holy Catholic Church that belongs to Anglo-Catholicism. Eliot has a doubting belief and finally became an Anglo-Catholic who believes in the doctrines such as Incarnation and Holy Trinity that differ from that of Unitarianism inherited from his family. His conversion was a lifetime doubt and progression accepting confession, pray, and contemplation for practice not a leap of faith. Eliot underwent a kind of gradual dialectic of reasons for his adopting ideological position throughout one’s earthly pilgrimage. At last Eliot found an Anglo-Catholic historic and religious community in East Coker to have certain admiration for the religious belief, for the life of prayer and contemplation, and for those who attempt to practise it.
