롱기누스의 시학과 엘리엇

Longinus’s Poetics and T. S. Eliot

본 글은 롱기누스의 『숭고에 관하여』에 나타난 그의 창작관을 토대로 엘리엇의 창작관과 비교해 보았다. 먼저 롱기누스는 문체상의 우수성을 언어표현의 뚜렷한 탁월성이라 주장하는데 이는 엘리엇에게 평범한 또는 일상적인 언어표현으로 나타난다. 그러면서 롱기누스는 지나친 과장을 절제하고 적절한 과장을 권유하면서 창작자의 중간조절장치를 요구한다. 이것이 엘리엇에게는 객관적 상관물로 나타나고 있으며 이는 롱기누스의 지적통제와 맥을 같이 한다. 다시 말해 작가는 지나치게 독창성을 추구한 나머지 미성숙함에 빠져들어서는 안되며 이를 위해서는 선배작가들의 장단점을 살펴 보아야한다는 점에 있어서 롱기누스와 엘리엇은 서로 유사하다. 또 한 가지 지시대상의 명확화를 롱기누스는 들고 있다. 이는 청자의 집중력을 의도한 롱기누스의 주장이라 할 수 있으며 엘리엇 또한 이를 작품에서 그대로 보여주고 있다.

Longinus’s On the Sublime mainly focuses on a writer or preacher’s narrative methods. He classifies the excellent methods of writing as the following: 1. striking distinction of a language; 2. using a suitable hyperbole based on a fact, not an excessive bombast; 3. controlling a writer’s emotion by using ballast or stabilizer; 4. imitation and emulation of the greatest prose writers and poets of antiquity; and 5. using periphrasis. All these characteristics that Longinus suggests are almost similar to Eliot’s writing technique. Eliot tries to use a daily dialogical style, a suitable hyperbole and an objective correlative to avoid his own emotions and depends on the dead poets like Longinus’s suggestions, and he uses a variety of rhetorics like Longinus’s periphrasis.
