T. S. Eliot’s Thoughts on Religion in The Waste Land: Christianity and Biblical Allusions

본 연구는 T. S. 엘리엇의 『황무지』에서 엘리엇이 인용한 성경적 인유들을 중심으로 작품 내에 함의 되어 있는 종교적인 의미를 분석해본 것이다. 『황무지』는 주지하다시피 엘리엇의 대표 초기 시로서 많은 이미지와 인유들로 가득한 난해한 시이다. 엘리엇이 1927년에 성공회로 개종을 하면서 그 후에 집필된 시들은 종교적인 색채가 드러나는 시들을 많이 집필하였으나, 개종 이전의 시 작품에 함의된 종교적인 의미들은 엘리엇의 난해하고 많은 시적 장치들과 신화적 인유들로 비교적 간과하기 쉽다. 본 글은 엘리엇이 인용한 성경적 인유들을 근거하여 엘리엇이 종교라는 신념을 자신의 시와 작품과 인생 전반의 지적 여정에서 얻고자 하였던 영적 깨달음과 지혜를 얻기 위한 하나의 신념 체계로 바라본다. 이러한 관점을 통해 『황무지』는 단순히 개종 이전의 신화적인 인유들과 난해한 이미지만 있는 작품이 아닌 엘리엇이 암시적으로 나타내려 했던 종교적인 의미가 내재되어 있는 시임을 다시금 확인할 수 있다.

This article examines T. S. Eliot’s thoughts on religion portrayed in The Waste Land in relation to his endeavour to attain the ultimate wisdom in his literary career and in his life. T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land is a literary masterpiece known for its finest complexity in the usage of imagery and classical and biblical allusions. By analysing his usage of Biblical allusions, it would be evident that Eliot alluded hidden religious meaning in this piece of work. Published in 1922, The Waste Land was written before his conversion to Anglo-Catholic in 1927. However, referring to his words in his prose and other works, it can be inferred that his religious thoughts were also implied in the pre-conversion works such as The Waste Land and Gerontion. Situating The Waste Land in the context of his quest for spiritual and intellectual understanding in his entire life, this would allow us to understand that there exists a particular system of thoughts on religion in his mind, which are implicitly alluded in his poetry. This religious meaning is indeed what Eliot was trying to imply in this masterpiece, and it was what he aimed to pursue throughout in his literary works and in his life.
