심층마음(아뢰야식)으로 숙고한 번트 노턴

Considering “Burnt Norton” in Alayavijnana

우주 궁극에 대한 진리는 인간이 어떠한 사유의 틀로 바라보느냐에 따라 표현도 달라진다. 우주 진리를 담고 있는 엘리엇의 걸작 「번트 노턴」에 대한 숙고도 마찬가라고 생각된다. 그동안 대부분의 학자들은 「번트 노턴」에 대하여 서양적 사유의 틀인 표층 의식적이고 분별적인 방법으로 해석하였고 그 견해는 다양하였다. 서양의 기독교적 사고의 특징은 우주만물의 중심에 있는 근원을 마음바깥의 관념인 신과 같은 외적초월주의였다. 반면에 동양의 불교는 모든 것이 마음이 지어낸다는 ‘일체유심조’의 관념이고 표층의식을 넘어 심층마음인 ‘아뢰야식’이 우주만물을 창조하는 근원임을 밝힌다. 우주 근원이 하나라는 원리는 동양과 서양이 다를 바 없지만, 사유의 틀에 따라 표현은 다르다고 하겠다. 필자는 동양 종교인 불교적 마음구조로 「번트 노턴」을 설명하였다. 심층마음인 아뢰야식은 인간이 살고 있는 기세간과 인간의 정신과 육체를 만들어내는 종자식이다. 이해를 돕기 위하여 불교의 기본교리인 십이연기, 사성제, 팔정도, 삼법인을 설명하였고 동양의 불교가 지혜의 종교임을 밝혔다.

The truth about the ultimate in the universe is expressed differently depending on what kind of thinking frame humans view. I think the same goes for Elliot’s masterpiece, “Burnt Norton”, which contains universe truth. Until now, most scholars have interpreted “Bunt Norton” in a Western thought frame, a surface-conscious and discerning method, and their views have varied. The characteristic of Western Christian thinking was an external transcendentalism considering the God at the center of universe as an idea of outside mind. On the other hand, Eastern Buddhism reveals that the concept of ‘one mindedness’ that everything is made up of the mind, and Alayavijnana, which is a deep mind beyond the surface consciousness, is the source of the creation of all things in the universe. The principle of one universe source is the same, but the expression is different depending on the frame of thought. I described “Bunt Norton” as the mind structure of Buddhism, an eastern religion. In order to help understanding, I explained the basic doctrines of Buddhism, such as Twelve Nidanas, Four Noble Truth, Eightfold Truth, Three Dharma seals. I also demonstrated the Eastern Buddhism as a religion of wisdom.
