T. S. Eliot’s “The Hippopotamus” and the Bible

「하마」는 엘리엇의 성숙기 이전의 작품으로서 세인들의 관심은 『황무지』와 『네 사중주』에 비해 적은 편이다. 「하마」는 모두 9개의 연(stanza)으로 구성된 단시이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 엘리엇의 초기 시의 특성 및 엘리엇의 기독교와 교회에 대한 생각을 살펴볼 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 또한 「하마」는 성경에 수록된 「욥기」와 「골로세서」 그리고 「계시록」 등을 배경으로 창작되었다. 특히 「하마」는 신약 성경에 등장하는 라오디게아 교인들에게 물질주의와 신앙을 동시에 숭배하는 태도에서 벗어나 진정한 기독교인으로 거듭나 천국에 입성할 것을 잘 보여준다. 바로 이 모습을 전달하기 위해 동물 “하마”를 엘리엇이 설정했다.

The Hippopotamus”concerns itself with the biblical background; “Job”, “Colossians”, “Revelation”. Eliot demands that a man should more focuse on Spirituality rather than materiality. Consequently, it is possible for us to observe Eliot’s Christianity and his thought on the church from the early stage. Eliot employs Hippopotamus to encourage Laodecians to believe in God more firmly, deviating from the material world. “The Hippopotamus”also shows us what the True Christianity and Christians mean. The work suggests to abandon the seculair things which would be disappeared and to depend on the spiritual world. Eliot shows it through the hippopotamus so vividly that we could grasp Eliot’s intention appropriately. At first, hippopotamus is absorbed in the fleshy world like a Laodecian Christian but finally, he repents and gets to heaven, and he was welcomed from the angels, listening to “hosannsa”, which means“Oh, Jesus, save us”. In this respect, “The Hippopotamus”is on the basis of the Bible.
