피츠버그 대학에서 15년간 읽기와 리터러시를 연구하며 EBS 프로그램 <당신의 문해력>을 기획해 이끈 저자는 최근 저서 『읽는 인간 리터러시를 경험하라』에서 이제는문해력을 넘어 맥락을 읽고 세상을 디자인하는 리터러시를 말해야 하는 시대라고 강조한다. 저자는 리터러시를 한 문장으로 정의하는 것은 어렵지만 파울로 프레이리가리터러시를 정의할 때 늘 ‘단어 읽기와 세상 읽기’라는 표현을 사용했다는 입장을 견지하며, 리터러시는 정확한 낱글자 읽기가 복잡다단한 세상 읽기로 전환되는 과정에기여하는 매우 정밀하고 섬세한 지적·정서적·사회적 의미의 구성 과정과 실천의 스펙트럼을 포괄하는 의미임을 시사한다. ‘배움의 도구’이자 사회적 개념인 ‘역사적 도구’로, 리터러시는 글자 읽기에서 출발하여 앎을 성찰하는 세상 읽기로 발전한다. 책은 모두가 좋은 리터러시를 갖추고 실천할 수 있도록 사회가 어떻게 도와주고 있는지 논의할 필요성이 있다며 리터러시의현황과 과제, 전망과 대한 다각적인 질문들을 던지고 유효한 답을 찾을 수 있도록 인도한다. 텍스트를 매개로 세상을 읽고 쓰는 리터러시를 실천하기 위해 우리는 어떤 삶의 자세를 가져야 할까. 저자는 삶의 경험을 근거로 의미를 디자인하는 과정이 필요함을논한다. 읽기와 쓰기는 소통하고 연대하는 사회를 디자인하는, 우리 사회를 바꾸는도구이므로 읽기와 쓰기로 세상을 바꾸는 리터러시 실천이 가능하다는 것이다. 앞으로도 리터러시의 의미는 다층적이고 복합적이며 포괄적으로 계속 확장될 것이기 때문에 저자의 통찰력 있는 후속 논의가 기대된다. 리터러시는 나로 살아가고 있다는증명이 될 수 있다. 리터러시가 공동체를 만든다는 입장을 견지하는 독자들에게 일독을 권한다.

The author, who planned and led the EBS program <Your Literacy> by studying reading and literacy at the University of Pittsburgh for 15 years, stresses in his recent book <Experience Reading Human Literacy> that it is time to talk about literacy that goes beyond literacy and designs the world. Although it is difficult to define literacy in one sentence, the author maintains that Paulo Frey always used the expression “word reading and world reading” when defining literacy, suggesting that literacy encompasses a very precise, delicate spectrum of intellectual, emotional, and social meanings. It is a ‘historical tool’ that is a ‘tool of learning’ and a social concept, and literacy starts from letter reading and develops into a world where you reflect on your knowledge. The book asks various questions about the current status, tasks, prospects and prospects of literacy, saying it is necessary to discuss how society is helping everyone to have and practice good literacy. What attitude of life should we have to practice literacy that reads and writes the world through text? The author discusses the need for a process of designing meaning based on life experiences. Reading and writing are tools that change our society, designing a society that communicates and solidifies, so it is possible to practice literacy that changes the world through reading and writing. In the future, the meaning of literacy will continue to expand in multi-layered, complex, and comprehensive ways, so the author's insightful follow-up discussion is expected.
