천주교 신자들이 점집이나 철학관에 드나드는 실태를 조사하는 것은 쉽지 않은 작업이다. 무엇보다도 교회에서 가르치는 기본적인 방침이 천주교 신자로서 그러한 행동을 죄악시해버리는 이유에서이다. 이는 교리적인 면에서도 유일신(하느님)에 대한 믿음을 바탕으로 천주교신자에게 강력하게 점복 신앙에 대한 접근을 인정하지 않기 때문이다. 천주교 신앙과 점복 신앙은 결코 양립될 수 없는 것이다. 그러나 현실 속에서는 천주교 신자들이 자신들의 신앙을 가지고 있음에도 불구하고 점집을 드나드는 일이 있다. 그리고 이러한 일에 대해 떳떳하게 이야기하지 못하고 몰래 이루어지는 것이 현실이기에 그렇다. 사제로서 고백성사를 진행하는 가운데 이러한 일로 많은 고민과 갈등을 안고 살아가는 사람들이 적지 않은 숫자임을 발견하게 된다. 이러한 문제 때문에 점집이나 철학관, 보살집 그리고 도사라는 간판이 붙어 있는 집들을 다녔었던 천주교 신자들을 면담하고 조사하는 과정이 쉽지 않다는 것을 느끼고 있다. 결국 조사자가 직접 방문하거나 면담하는 것이 사제이기 때문에 어느 정도 주도적인 입장을 가질 수 있다고 생각했었지만 여러 차례의 사람들과의 점복에 관한 대화를 꺼리는 것을 알게 되었다. 이를 위해서 설문지를 작성하여 설문조사방법으로 실시하였으며, 우선, 연구자의 주변에서 가까운 분들의 도움을 입어 한정된 작업을 할 수 밖에 없었다. 그리하여 천주교 안에 있는 신앙단체들 중 레지오 마리애 회원들을 대상으로 도시와 농촌 지역을 고루 안배하고, 구 제주와 신 제주 지역들을 선정함에 있어 점복신앙을 접촉하는 천주교인들의 거주지와 경력, 구성원들이 토박이와 육지에서 온 천주교인들을 감안하여 시 내외 10개 본당(총 24개 본당)중심으로 조사하였다. 이상의 결과를 통해서 제주 천주교인들도 점복에 대한 관심이 많다는 것을 알아 볼 수 있다. 제주의 오랜 역사와 함께 점복신앙으로부터 자유로운 시대는 없었다. 여전히 제주인의 정서 깊은 곳에서 점복의 세계관의 지배를 받고 있으며, 그것은 제주의 역사와 문화가 증언해주고 있다. 제주 천주교인들의 의식, 무의식중에 점복신앙을 따르고 있는 것을 인정하는 일이 필요하다.
It is not easy works that to survey of the actual conditions of The Roman Catholic believers pay a visit to fortunetelling place. Most of all, The reason is that the basic instruction of the Roman Catholic conclude that kind of the behavior of Catholic Church's believers is sin. And on the catechism, The Roman Catholic do not permit strongly that their believers accessing to the fortunetelling belief by based on the belief of monotheism. The Roman Catholic’s belief could not standing with fortunetelling belief. But actually, even if the Catholic’s believers have there own belief, but they sometimes visit to fortunetelling place. And The fact, usually they do not talk about that openly, they visit that place in secretly. By the priest, in the confession, I can find the persons that they are carry on the agony and the trouble with that behavior are not few. So that, I fell it is not easy to meet and to examining the Catholic’s believers that they have visited so many different kind fortunetelling place. I thought, by the priest, I will have the initiative to visit and to interview with the subject persons. But by the several times trial, I became aware that they hesitated to talk about fortunetelling. So I made the question sheet and tried to the method of question sheet investigation, But I had to limited works in assistance of acquaintance. At first, I choose the member of Regio Marie in the action parties of Catholic church. And then I prior arrange the members of the 10 parish(Total 24 parish) in consider of the balance of the city and the rural, of the old jeju city and the new jeju city, of the residence area and the carrier, of the residents and the immigrants. From the result of the survey, I could knew that Jeju Catholic Church’s believers frequently interested in fortunetelling. During the long history of Jeju island, there is no moment free from the fortunetelling belief. And now also they are ruled by the sense of fortunetelling values. It is testified by the history and the culture of Jeju island. It is necessary to identify that the jeju Catholic church’s believers following with the fortunetelling belief in conscious and unconsciousness.
