불교와 성(性)

Buddhism and Sexuality

성(性)은 인간존재 조건이며 또 인간존재 양태이기도 하다. 인간은 성교를 통한 존재지움과 일정한 성을 지니고 살 수 밖에 없는 남/녀라는 존재양태에 갇혀있다. 종교는 성문제를 불편하게 여기거나 기피한다. 종교와 성은 서로 상치되는 것으로 여기거나 금기시한다. 그러나 실제로 종교들의 교리이거나 그 역사적 전개를 볼 때 오히려 종교와 성은 밀착되어 있고 어느 면 표리를 이룬다. 불교는 성문제를 초기부터 가장 현실적으로 다루어 갔다. 초기 계율의 제정은 수범수제(隨犯隨制)라는 현장, 현실의 행위에 대한 해석으로 이루어져 있다. 규범적이거나 절대명제아래에서 귀납적으로 다루어 가지 않았다. 그런 면에서 기독교의 윤리규범과는 확연히 차별화되어있다. 번뇌가 곧 깨달음이라는 불이론(不二論)적 구조를 지닌 불교사상은 성문제를 다룰 때에도 그대로 이 구조를 따른다. 곧 성(聖)스러움과 성은 별개의 사항이 아니고 오히려 가장 인간적인 표현인 성(性)을 통해 성(聖)은 표출되는 것으로 되어있다. 성(性)을 통한 성화(聖化)와 성(聖)을 거친 성화(性化)야 말로 인간구원의 길임을 현시한다. 특히 우리 한국의 삼국유사에 나타난 불교설화는 성의 문제와 깨달음, 곧 구원의 길이 표리를 이루고 있음을 적시하고 있다. 그리고 그것은 불교사상의 근간을 이루고 있다. 따라서 후대 밀교불교의 발달은 그것의 노골적 성적표현을 세속적으로 만 해석할 것은 아니다. 오히려 인간 실상에 대한 직접적인 승화된 표현으로 해석될 부분이 크다.

This paper is intended to elucidate the duality of sexuality and enlightenment in Buddhist context, particularly focused on Korean Buddhist traditions. Sexuality is, as assumed to be rarely stated in Buddhist texts and even prohibited in mentioning it, largely quoted in Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhist texts. Sexuality-sex topics are frequently selected in establishing Buddhist precepts(戒律). These precepts rather reflect on how the Buddhist monks organized the religious community, in which they behaved themselves, and eventaully how the Buddhist order was estalished. Particularly, sex related events were crucial to organize the Buddhist community and interpret the Buddhist doctrines in practices. The dual systems of the secular and the overbeyond, the profane and the sacred have been overcome by the Buddhist theory as well as practices. In this regard, sex motivated episodes has been abundantly produced in Mahayana traditions in China, Japan and Korea. Wonhyo is the one whom I selected as an episode of sex symbolism. Wonhyo, well known as Korean intellectual hero, was typical one and showed us the sex is the very way to transcend beyond the secularity. The separation of sex and the sacred falls in the formal logic, which rarely overcomes the dialectic process.
