원효와 베르그송의‘생명’이해

Wonhyo and H. Bergson’s Understanding of ‘Life’: A Hermeneutical Comparison

‘삶’과 ‘생명’(life)의 문제는 우리들에게 가장 오래된 근본적인 문제지만, 전통의 종교와 철학으로는 오늘날 새롭게 대두된 ‘생명’과 관련된 문제들은 해결하기에 매우 어려워 보인다. 하지만 우리는 역사적 존재이고 문화적 존재이다. 다라서 우리는 ‘온고지신(溫故知新)’의 방식을 통하여 우리에게 새롭게 주어진 ‘생명’에 대한 의문을 풀어갈 수밖에 없다. 또한 문화가 다르면 가치관이 다르고 문제 해결방식도 다르다. 그러므로 우리는 우리의 문화적 전통 안에서 형성된 가치관이 무엇인지 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 그런데 현재 우리의 문화는 전통의 불교적 유교적 요소들과 서구의 그리스도교적 그리스‧로마‧게르만적 요소들이 뒤섞여 있다. 이것은 우리의 전통 사상은 물론, 서구의 철학도 살펴보아야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 바로 이런 의미에서 우리는 시대, 역사, 문화, 종교적 배경이 서로 매우 상이한 원효(元曉)와 앙리 베르그송(H. Berson) 두 철학자의 ‘생명’에 대한 생각을 ‘해석학적’으로 비교해보고자 한 것이다. ‘생명’의 문제에 대해서 원효와 베르그송이 공통적으로 제시하고 있는 것을 ‘해석학적’인 의미로 표현한다면, 1) 모든 생명의 동등함, 2) 한계를 뛰어넘는 창조적 삶에 대한 긍정, 곧, 생명과 자유가 될 것이며. 3) 모든 살아있는 것에 대한 자비(사랑), 곧 생명과 사랑(자비)이다. 두 위대한 철학자들은 우리로 하여금 치열하게 물질의 저항을 이겨내고 자신의 삶(생명)을 더 높은 차원으로 고양하고 승화시키기 위해 노력하도록 충고하고 있는 것이다.

While the matter of ‘Living’ and ‘Life’ has been the most aged and essential question to us, it does not seem that the newly appeared questions as to ‘Life’ can hardly be solved by traditional religious and philosophical thoughts. However, we are ‘historical and cultural being’. Therefore we have to solve the questions about ‘Life’ newly given to us only through the method of ‘Review the old and Learn the new (ongojisin)’. And also if the cultures are different, so are the values and the ways to solve the problems. We, thus, need to examine what the value formed in our cultural tradition is. Our present culture is mixed with traditional Korean, Buddhistic, Confucian elements and Western -Greek, Roman, German, etc.- ones. This means that we should examine the western philosophy as well as our traditional thoughts. So this meaning lead us to compare the thoughts about ‘Life’ of two philosophers-Wonhyo and H. Bergson with very different background of age, history, culture, religion. To express the subjects as to the matter of ‘Life’ in the meaning of ‘Hermeneutics’, commonly suggested by Wonhyo and H. Bergson, they are; 1) Equality of all Lives, 2) Affirmation to creative lives transcending the limit, it must be ‘Life and Liberty’, 3) Love for the all living creatures, it must be ‘Life and Love(Mercy)’. Two great philosophers advise us to make efforts to overcome the resistance of material severely, to raise and sublimate one’s Living(Life) into an upper level.
