심청전의 주제의식과 근원설화에 대한 관조

Shim-Cheong Jeon's Theme and Its Probable Root Stories in Tripitaka Concerning Traditional Ethics of Filial Piety

심청전은 지극한 효성과 그 인과응보를 생생하게 극적으로 그린 전통문학의 대표작품이다. 효성의 결과 봉사 아버지가 눈을 뜨는 소원을 이루기 전에, 심청은 미리 황후가 되는 보답을 받고, 아버지를 찾기 위해 모든 장님을 궁궐에 초청하여, 효행을 통해 부친과 중생 구제는 물론 자기 구원도 함께 이루는 대승 보살행을 펼친다. 심청전은 다른 전통문학작품처럼 유불선 삼교합일의 영향을 함께 받았으나, 특히 불교의 대승 효도사상이 짙게 배어 있다. 본 글은 이러한 관점에서 심청전의 주제의식을 살펴보고, 특히 핵심주제라고 할 수 있는 ‘개안’의 근원설화를 불교 경전과 중국역사에서 대여섯 편 찾아 그 내용을 간추려 소개하였다. ‘심청(沈淸)’의 동음이자(同音異字)인 ‘심청(心淸)’은 불교 유식사상의 핵심명제를 떠올린다.

Shim-Cheong Jeon has been regarded as one most representative traditional literature in Korea. It vividly depicts the extreme filial piety and its causality of karma. Shim-Cheong had become the empress as the result of the extreme filial piety of self-sacrifice before her blind father recovered his eyesight, and she entertained all the blind persons in the whole empire at some days long banquet in palace, which indicates the Mahayana Bodhisattva's Practice to accomplish not only relief of her father and numerous peoples, but her own self-saving. Certainly Shim-Cheong Jeon as well as the other traditional literature works were influenced by the trinity of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, but was especially infiltrated with the filial piety teaching of Mahayana Buddhism. This paper on the basis of these viewpoints tries to shed light on Shim-Cheong Jeon's theme and its probable root stories over the recovery of eyesight in Buddhist scriptures and Chinese history. One homonym of ‘Shim-Cheong(沈淸)’ in Chinese character has the 'Mind Clearness(心淸)', which implies the key sentence of the theory of consciousness-only(唯識論) in Buddhism: “Mind clean, universe clean.”
