Keynote Speech: The Moral Consciousness of Korean Religious People

종교는 인류역사와 더불어 시작되었을 것이고, 종교와 신앙의 필요성은 엄청난 자연재해와 인간의 한계성에서 비롯되었을 것이다. 인류역사의 어느 과정에서든 종교의 필요성과 더불어 무용론은 늘 제기되어왔다. 우리민족의 경우 어느 시대를 막론하고 샤머니즘과 역사적 종교가 공존해 왔으며, 오늘날에 이르러서는 원시종교, 역사적 종교, 민족종교, 신흥종교 등이 공존함에 따라 다종교 상황을 연출하고 있는 실정이다. 이러한 상황 속에서 종교 간 과열 경쟁이 이따금 빚어지는바 민족종교와 세계종교간, 원시종교와 역사적 종교 간, 서양종교와 동양종교간, 동일 종교내 종파간의 경쟁 및 갈등이 심화되는 양상을 띠고 있어 종교간 대화가 절실히 필요한 시점이다. 설상가상격으로 각 종교의 성직자들 및 신도들의 비도덕적 내지 비윤리적 행태도 비일비재하여 사회문제화 되고 있는 상황이다. 과거에는 종교가 우리 사회를 이끌어 왔다고 볼 수 있는데 요즘에는 사회가 오히려 종교계를 염려하는 역현상이 나타나고 있다. 이러한 심각한 분위기를 고려하여 금번 학술대회 주제를 “종교인의 윤리의식”이라고 설정한 것으로 보인다. 따라서 본 기조발표에서는 종교와 윤리의 관계, 윤리의 기원 문제, 종교인(성직자, 신도)의 윤리의식 문제 등을 중심으로 최근 급격하게 실추된 종교인들의 윤리의식의 고양을 위해, 기본적이고 상식적인 종교윤리의 제고를 촉구하는 내용으로 발표문을 작성하였다. 종교인들은 이제 전근대적인 봉건적 사고의 틀, 구태의연한 권위주의적 태도, 세속적 물량주의에서 벗어나, 뼈를 깎는 각오와 태도로 코페르니쿠스적(혁명적) 의식의 전환이 필요한 시점에 와 있다. 한마디로 말해서 특히 종교인들의 도덕성 회복이 시급한 상황이다.

It is believed that religion began with human history and the necessity of faith arose because of catastrophes and the limit of human beings' power. Accordingly, in any time and any place there have been debates on the utility or uselessness of religion. In the case of Korean history, there have been a lot of belief systems practiced such as Shamanism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism, Ethno-religions against paganism, Protestantism, and various other new religious movements. As such, there have been a lot of conflicts between these religions due to different beliefs and their power struggles to expand their influence. To make things worse, there are times when religious people (priests or laymen) are involved with things such as sex scandals, corruption charges, and nepotism etc, which has led to the rapid decline of the moral consciousness of religious people. A recent example of this is The Sewol Ferry Tragedy on April 16, 2014. This tells us the depravity of a fanatic Korean Christian sect. The Sewol Ferry from Incheon to Jeju was run by the powerful member of a small sect, the Evangelical Baptist Church, a so called “sect of Salvation”. Even though their slogan or purpose of ‘Salvation’ was the essence of the Christian Bible, they focused more on monetary profit rather than religious salvation. The Sewol Ferry Tragedy brought death to many people instead of bringing salvation to Korean society. As a result of this tragedy many Korean people have begun to doubt the sincerity and truthfulness of Korean religious people, especially Christians. Therefore, in this keynote speech paper I argued Korean religious ethics must reconsider the following things : the relation between religion and ethics, the origin of morality, the status quo of the moral consciousness of Korean religious people, and the way we can overcome these religious chaotic conditions. Furthermore I argued if Korean Christianity really wants to survive, it must keep in mind the following point, “Christianity must change or die” as said by the American Episcopal Church Bishop, John Shelby Spong.
