21세기 지구환경시대의 새로운 패러다임으로 등장하게 된 “지속가능한 개발(ESSD, Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development) 또는 발전”은 지구환경에 미치는 악영향을 최소화하고자 하는 개념으로서 다시 말해 지속가능한 개발의 핵심이 되며, 이는 환경보전과 경제발전 그리고 사회발전을 조화시켜 현세대 인류의 삶의 질을 향상시키고 이것이 “환경적으로 건전하고 지속가능한 개발 또는 발전”을 지향하고자 하는 것이다. 따라서 본 고는 오직 하나뿐인 지구환경을 보전하고 우리 인류의 건강하고 풍요로운 삶을 보장할 수 있는 지속가능한 발전이 환경에만 국한하지 않고, 일반적인 정책의 영역인 경제, 사회를 포함하고 있다. 특히 종교를 더하여 하나님과의 약속을 회복할 수 있도록 실천이 필요하다. ‘나, 타인, 사물’이 하나님이 지으신 세계의 원리에 순응하도록 지속가능발전에 기독교의 역할과 책임의 중요성을 강조하며 그에 대한 실천전략을 제시함으로써, 기독교인으로서의 자세와 의무를 회복하는 계기를 조성하고 이를 널리 전파하는 데 본 고의 목적으로 둔다.
