기독교사회윤리에서 본 공공성

Stackhouse on Publicness and Christian Social Ethics: From the Perspective of Max L. Stackhouse

시민사회에서 교회의 공공성에 대한 요청은 한국기독교에 절실하다. 특이하게도, 한국기독교는 공공성의 요청에 부응하여 공공신학에 관심하는 와중에 교회가 공공성에 미숙하거나 구현하지 못하고 있다는 ‘역습’을 받고 있다. 공공성의 역습에 대한 정공법은 공공신학에 대한 바른 인식과 실천이다. 스택하우스의 공공신학을 중심으로 공공 영역에서 기독교의 역할을 풀어내는 이유이다. 스택하우스의 공공신학에서, 공공 영역에 대한 인식은 카이퍼의 영역주권론을 계승한 것과 연관된다. 특별은총 영역인 교회와 일반은총 영역인 사회는 각각 별개의 것이 아니라 그리스도의 주권이 세워져야 하는 두 측면이다. 이것이 기독교가 공공 영역을 바라보는 특징이다. 특히, 스택하우스의 공공신학은 영역주권론의 계승을 통하여 공공 영역에 대한 기독교적 관심과 책임을 역설한다. 종교의 역할에 관하여, 스택하우스의 공공신학은 기독교사회윤리의 확장된 버전을 제시한다. 니버의 기독교사회윤리가 아가페 구현을 위한 근사치적 접근으로서의 정의에 관심했다면, 스택하우스는 글로벌 시민사회를 배경으로 공공성의 구현을 기독교사회윤리의 핵심으로 제안함으로써 지평을 확장시켰다. 공적 책임과 소통을 비롯한 사회윤리학적 실천과제를 제시한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 다만, 기독교가 공공 영역을 향하여 ‘나아가기’ 전에 점검해야 할 것이 있다. 정체성에 대한 인식이 그것이다. 이와 관련하여, 스택하우스가 제시한 공공성에 관한 신학적 성찰을 보완하는 카운터파트로서 하우어워스의 교회윤리는 의미있는 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다. 교회됨의 정체성을 교회됨을 확립하는 노력에 근거하여 공공 영역을 향하여 나아가야 한다는 뜻이다. 놓치지 말아야 할 것은 공공성에 대한 논의를 한국기독교의 윤리성숙이라는 맥락에서 사회적 영성의 문제로 확장시켜야 한다는 점이다. 공공성에 대해 관심하는 것은 하강국면에 접어든 교세회복을 위한 이미지 개선의 전략이 아니라 한국 기독교가 개인적 영성에 치중하는 와중에 놓치고 있던 사회적 영성의 회복으로 인식되어야 한다. ‘잘되는 영성’으로부터 ‘사회적 영성’으로 나아가자는 뜻이다.

In civil society, the request for publicness of church is particularly urgent for Korean Christianity. This is because the church is being counterattacked by the publicness. The standard tactics is realization of public theology. In this context, Stackhouse’s public theology could be contribute for overcomming the counterattack of civil request. Stackhouse’s public theology has influenced by Abraham Kuiper’s theology of sphere sovereignty. Church as the shere of special grace and society as the sphere of general grace are two aspects of Christ’s sovereignty. This is the hallmark of Christianity’s view of the public domain. Stackhouse emphasizes Christian responsibility in the public domain through the succession of sphere sovereignty. Regarding the role of religion, Stackhouse presents an expanded version of Christian social ethics. If Reinhold Niebuhe’s Christian social ethics was interested in social justice as an approximate approach to implementing Agape, Stackhouse expanded its horizons by proposing the implementation of publicness as the core of Christian social ethics. However, there is something to be checked before Christianity ‘goes out’ toward the public domain. In this regard, ecclesial ethics of S. Hauerwas plays a meaningful role as a counterpart to supplement Stackhouse’s public theology. It should be noted that discussions on publicness should be linked to ethical maturity of Korean Christianity. Instead of pursuing a strategy for the restoration of Christianity in Korea, which has entered a downward phase, attention should be paid to the realization of publicness based on the identity of the church.
