무극대도 도주 용강 강승태의 대일항전과 새 사회건설

The War of Resistance against Japanese colonialism and the Construction of a New Society by Kang Seung-tae, the Master of the ‘Mugeukdaedo’

이 논문은 무극대도의 도주인 용강(龍江) 강승태(姜昇泰)가 식민지시기에 전개한 대일항전의 과정과 새 사회 건설운동의 내용을 종교적 관점으로 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 용강은 1895년 제주 하예리에서 태어나 23세(1917)에 보천교에 입교한 바 있고, 30세(1924)에 강증산 천사를 뵙는 신비체험을 하였으며, 1936년에 무극대도를 창교하였다. 단군으로부터 대일항전하라는 명을 받고, 기도실행 중에 일경에체포되어 도생들과 함께 옥고를 치르다가 1945년 광복 후에 함께 석방되었다. 용강이 대일항전을 통해 이루려고 한 새 사회, 새 나라의 방향은 불행하게도그에 대한 일제 법원의 판결문에 의지하여 연구할 수 밖에 없는 한계가 있다. 그럼에도 그의 일관된 신념은 신앙과 천명에 기초한 대일항전이었고, 그의 투쟁의 목표는 일왕을 폐위하고 조선 중심의 새 나라, 새 세계를 건설하여 개벽을이루려는 것이었다. 그것이 용강이 실천할 수 있는 유일한 독립쟁취요, 해방이었다. 그를 따르는 도생들도 여기에 기꺼이 목숨을 바쳤다. 특히 충청도 계룡산에서 성군(聖君)을 모시고 새 나라를 개국하겠다는 그의 원대한 경륜과 포부는이전 세대 정신적 지도자들의 것을 계승한 것이었다. 역사적으로는 고조선시대의 「신지비사」에까지 올라갈 수 있다. 이처럼 계룡산을 중심으로 새 나라를 세우고 세계를 통일하려는 용강의 종교적 이상은 1980년대까지도 신종교들에 의해 이어져 왔으며, 현실적으로는 계룡산 인근인 세종시와 대전시를 중심으로 정부청사가 이전한 것도 간과할 수 없는점이 있다고 생각한다.

This study clarifies resisting Japanese colonialism and the contents of the new social construction movement by Yonggang Kang Seung-tae, the supreme owner of the Mugeukdaedo religion, from a religious perspective. Yonggang was born in Haye-ri, Jeju in 1895, entered Bocheongyo at the age of 23 (1917), had a mysterious experience of having visions of the highest teacher, Gangjeungsan at the age of 30 (1924), and established the Mugeukdaedo religion in 1936. He was ordered by Dangun to resist Japanese colonialism, was arrested by the Japanese police during prayers, and imprisoned with his disciples; they were released after liberation in 1945. Unfortunately, the contents of the new society and new country that Yonggang aimed to achieve by fighting against Japan have limitations that have to be studied by relying on the judgment of the Japanese court. Nevertheless, his consistent belief was a resistance to Japanese colonialism based on faith and orders from heaven, and his goal was the Abolition of the Japanese Emperor to build a new country and world around Joseon. This was Yonggang struggle for liberation; his disciples were also willing to give their lives to this cause. In particular, his career and ambition was toward a new country with a king at Gyeryongsan Mountain, Chungcheong Province. This was inherited by previous generations of spiritual leaders; historically, it can be reached to the poem “Shinji Bisa” in the Gojoseon period. As such, Yonggang's religious ideal of establishing a new country and unifying the world around Gyeryongsan Mountain was continued by new religions until the 1980s. In reality, I think it is also related to the relocation of government buildings around Sejong City and Daejeon City, near Gyeryongsan Mountain.
