이 연구는 20세기 초부터 사용되기 시작한 배달의 용어적 활용과 그 의미를근대 민족정체성 발전 과정에서 탐색하고자 한다. 1908년에 창시된 대종교 경전에서 처음 사용되기 시작한 ‘배달’이라는 용어는 빠르게 종교를 뛰어넘어 한민족성을 상징하는 단어의 개념이자 접두어가 되었다. 따라서 이 연구는 배달과 대종교의 상호관계에서 이 개념이 개국시조인 단군과 그의 시대와 관련된 한민족의 신화적 내러티브를 역사화함으로써 근대 한국 민족정체성을 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 했다고 보았다. 물론 이 개념이 해석되고 확산되는데 있어 당시 민족주의자와 역사가들의 자의적 해석이 없었다고는 할 수 없음에도 역사성 확대는 단군 내러티브가 민족 역사성과, 이를 통한 한민족이 민족정체성을 획득하는데 큰 역할을 했다. 특히 밝은 나라로 해석되는 배달은 민족적 동질성, 선택된민족으로서의 존엄성, 역사적 황금기에 대한 향수 및 독립 이후 국가가 추구해야 할 덕목과 같은 종합적인 정체성 요인을 갖춘 것으로, 식민지 시대뿐 아니라독립 이후에도 한국의 정체성의 신화 및 역사적 정체성의 중심의 자리매김할 수있었다.
This study explores the original terminology and meaning of Baedal in the early 20th century: the dawn of Korean nationalism and identity. Baedal first appeared in the script of the Korean native religion, Daejongism. Established in 1908, it swiftly became a symbolic prefix of a word to represent Koreanness within and even outside the religion within this context of co-relations between Baedal and Daejongism. This research shows that the idiom played a critical role in forming modern Korean national identity by codifying Koreans’ mythical narratives regarding a founding father, Dangun, and his epoch. The term spread because of the great efforts of the then Korean nationalists, gaining its historicity in the myth; although there might have been exaggeration and embellishments. Standing for the Bright Land, Baedal was located deeply in the heart of the then Koreans oppressed by Imperial Japan, serving as a set of identity components: a new name for binding a population based on ethnic homogeneity, dignity as the chosen people, nostalgia over the golden age, and virtues for what the Korean nation must be after independence.
