1920년대 출판경영인 강하형의 『자조론』 아류 서적 번역과 출판

A study on Self-help book Published by Gang ha-hyeong, A publisher in Korea in the 1920s Translation and publication of the biography of the great man and the youth training book

이 연구는 1920년대 초 태화서관에서 출판한 『위인성공의 경로』,『(20세기) 청년독본: 일명 수양편』과 같은 위인전과 수양서 형태로 출간된 서적이 ‘자조론’의 가치를 파급시킨 『자조론』아류 서적이라는 사실을 밝히고, 이 같은자조론』 아류 서적이 일본에서 한국으로 유통되는 과정 및 그 의미를 살펴본것이다. 『위인성공의 경로』와 『(20세기) 청년독본: 일명 수양편』은 출판경영인강하형이 기획한 1920년대 태화서관의 새로운 상업적 출판물로서 검토하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째『위인성공의 경로』는 1914년 일본에서 출간된『정신수양분투가입지훈』을 번역한 것이며, 이것은 ‘자조론’의 정신을 통해 직업적 성공을 이룬 인물의 이야기로 구성되었다. 둘째 『정신수양분투가입지훈』은 일본인과 서구인으로 구성된 세계위인전이자 수양서인데, 이를 번역한 『위인성공의 경로는 서구인으로만 구성된 서구위인전으로 출간되었다. 셋째 『위인성공의 경로』의 치부성공한 위인 이야기 및『(20세기) 청년독본: 일명 수양편』에서 말하는 수양 덕목은 1900년대 이후 일본에서 오리슨 스웨트 마든이 주장하던 직업적 성공과 결부된 가치로 ‘자조론’이 유통되고 있던 상황이 반영된 것이었다. 요컨대 이 연구는 상업적 이익을 목적으로 한 출판경영인이 기획·출판한『자조론』 아류 서적에 대한 사례 연구로서 의미가 있다. 특히 이 같은 작업을통해 1920년대『자조론』 아류 서적에 대한 ‘청년’의 구독 수요를 우회적으로밝혔다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.

This study examines the process of reproducing the value of ‘Self-help’ and its meaning through the Self-help book published in the form of the biography of great men and youth training book at Taehwa Seogwan in the early 1920s. The three results of this study are summarized as follows. First, The biography of great men published by Taehwa Seogwan is a translation of The biography of world great men published in Japan in 1914. The biography of world great men, published in Japan, consists of the story of a person who achieved professional success through the spirit of self-help. Second, in Japan, it was composed of an exhibition of world greats composed of Japanese and Westerners. However, in the process of being translated by Taehwa Seogwan, this book of great men in the world was published as a book of great men of the West, composed only of Westerners. Third, The influence of Orison Sweat Madden’s successism, which was popular in Japan after the 1900’s, was reflected in the biography of great men and the youth training book published at Taehwa Seogwan in the early 1920s.
