Synthesis of Hollow Mesoporous TiN Nanostructures as An Efficient Catalyst Support for Methanol Electro-Oxidation

Developing energy systems having eco-friendly power generation and high energy conversion such as a DMFC is always an important issue. However, it is well known that Pt catalysts are prone to poisoned easily by CO generated during methanol oxidation in the DMFC's anode electrode. In this study, we report our effort to replace the carbon support to titanium nitride one which has not only excellent electrical conductivity but also great stability in electrochemical reaction condition. We synthesized Hollow TiN nanoparticles by sol-gel synthesis followed by sequential base etching, thermal treatment under ammonia atmosphere. Variation of the annealing temperature allowed the crystalline of the TiN to be controlled. Pt nanoparticles were deposited on the prepared TiN supports through surfactantstabilized method. We conducted the electrooxidation reaction using the prepared Pt/TiN catalysts, and confirmed that they have excellent electrochemical performances in methanol electrooxidation.
