The Life of Maria Cho and her Women's Leadership

독립운동사에서 여성이 차지하는 비율은 아주 미미한 수준에 불과하다. 그러나 여성독립운동가들은 이미 알려진 것보다 훨씬 많을 것으로 판단된다. 이는 남성 본위의 권위주의가 팽배했던 탓이기도 하지만, 지금까지 한국여성독립운동에 관한 체계적인 연구가 미흡했던 것도 중요한 이유 중의 하나일 것이다. 물론 관련 연구의 부족은 연구자들의 무관심이나 자료 한계에서 비롯되는 것이기도 하다. 본 논문은 국가 위기 시의 모범적인 여성 리더십으로서 안중근 의사의 어머니 조마리아의 사례를 보여주고 있다. 조마리아는 아들 안중근의 독립운동을 적극 지지하며 위대한 민족영웅으로 만들어냈을 뿐만 아니라, 그 자신이 해외 망명지연해주와 상해에서 영향력 있는 여성지도자로서 독립운동사에 큰 족적을 남겼다. 자료의 한계가 있지만, 기존에 발굴된 자료들을 중심으로 그의 리더십, 안중근을 위대한 민족영웅으로 만든 조마리아의 모성리더십, 또한 해외 망명지에서의 여성독립운동가로서의 리더십을 분석하고 있다.

The The proportion of women in the independence movement history is only a very minimal level. However, female independence activists are likely have lot more than already known. The reason for this is perhaps because of male-oriented authoritarianism widespread. Until now, the lack of systematic research on the Korean women independence movement will be also one of the important reasons. Of course, the lack of research is too derived from the researchers' indifference or material limit. This paper shows an example of Maria Cho’s leadership as a model of female leadership at the time of national crisis. She supported strongly the independence movement of her son Ahn Joong-Geun, and so made him one of the most famous national hero. Furthermore, she left a large footprint as an influential female leader in the independence movement history in Maritime provinces and Shanghai. Although the limitations of material, this paper analyses, focusing on existing resources, Maria Cho's maternal leadership that made Ahn Joong-Geun a great national hero and leadership as female independence activist in exile abroad.
