제1장 월남 이상재의 구국투쟁과 한국민족주의

Wolnam Lee Sang-jae's Fighting to Save Country and Korean Nationalism

본 논문은 월남 이상재 선생의 구국투쟁과 한국민족주의를 분석한 글이다. 월남 이상재 선생에 대한 선행연구를 보면 월남 이상재 선생을 연구하는 기관과 종교적 관점에서 연구가 편중되어 있는 것이 사실이다. 특히 기독교적 관점에서 연구된 논문은 많은 편이지만 그의 사상적 측면과 민족주의에 대한 객관화된 논문은 미흡한 것이 현실이다. 본 논문은 월남 이상재 선생의 구국투쟁 활동과 민족주의에 대한 현대적 재조명이 이루어지지 않은 상황에서 객관적 결론을 도출하기 어려운 한계를 가지고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 그의 생애 활동을 중심으로 주관적인 추론으로 연구될 수밖에 없다는 한계를 가지고 출발하였음을 밝힌다. 본 논문은 먼저 월남 이상재 선생에 대한 초보적인 사상과 이념을 이해하기 위해서 당시의 시대적 배경과 그의 사상에 지대한 영향을 미친 박정양과의 조우에 대해 살펴보고, 다음으로 구국투쟁 활동을 독립협회, 기독교, 교육 및 언론을 통한 구국운동으로 분류하여 시계열적 방법으로 분석하고자 한다. 월남 이상재 선생의 민족주의에 대한 부분은 근대화, 교육과, 종교관, 정치관적 시각으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 마지막으로 결론에서는 월남 이상재 선생의 사상의 현대적 해석과 향후 과제에 대해 논하였다

This article analyzes Wolnam Lee Sang-jae’s fighting to save country and Korean nationalism. Previous literature has paid particular attention to his patriotic activities in Dong Nip Hyeop Hoe and religious sphere. In particular, study on his activities from the Christian point of view has been found, but it has been rare for us to see objectified research on his thoughts and nationalism. The article, indeed, hardly draws an objective conclusion in that there exists no systematic research on Wolnam Lee Sang-jae’s fighting to save country and Korean nationalism. Therefore, the study might end up with a subjective inference about his lifetime activities. The article examines the backgrounds of the earlier times and an encounter with Park Jeong-yang to understand his primitive thought and ideology. Next, the paper analyzes his fighting to save country through Dong Nip Hyeop Hoe, Christianity, education, and the press in a timely manner. Specifically, his nationalism is decomposed by educational, religious, political views and modernization. Finally, the article discusses a contemporary implication of his thoughts and further study.
