A Study on Moral Values of Shin Chae-ho

본 논문은 신채호의 도덕관에 관한 연구이다. 도덕이란 인간이 지녀야 할 윤리규범이며, 사회를 지탱하기 위해서 없어서는 안 되는 것이다. 그런데 단재는 구도덕을 악도덕(惡道德) 규정하고 파괴할 대상으로 보고 있다. 본 논문에서 반도덕관(反道德觀)을 주장하게 된 근거는 무엇이며 그 과정을 밝히고자 한다. 본 논문은 그의 저작 ‘도덕’에 대한 부분을 근거로 해서 단재의 도덕관을 세 가지로 나누었다. 우선, 단재는 20세기에 어울리는 신국민의 도덕관을 제시한다. 신국민은 평등하고 자유로울 권리가 있으며, 그러기 위해서는 사리심을 버리고 공익에 힘써야 함을 강조한다. 다음으로 도덕을 개인(是非)의 차원에서 국가(利害)차원으로 설명하고 있다. 이것은 인류의 생존과 관련된 것이며 생존에 부합하는 것을 이(利)라하고 생존에 반대되는 것은 해(害)가 되는 것으로 국가에 이익 되는 것이라면 어떤 방법이든 정당하다는 것으로 본다. 마지막으로 망국민(亡國民)의 반도덕관이다. 우리가 생존하려면 지배자들이 피지배자들을 통치하려고 자기들에게 유용하게 만든 악도덕은 부인해야 한다고 본다. 여기서 신채호의 악도덕 =반도덕관이 제시되고 있다. 단재 도덕관은 주관적인 것이지만 특수한 시대로서 처절한 삶의 투쟁이며, 최후의 시도로 보아야 할 것이다. 그는 오로지 난국을 극복하기 위해 최후의 수단으로 반도덕관을 제시 하였던 것이다.

This study focuses on moral values of Shin Chae-ho(pen name Danjae). The morality is a code of ethics that human should follow, and a vital component of society. However, Danjae labels the old morality as an ‘evil’ that must be rooted out. The study examines the basis of his anti-moral values and traces how he developed those values. Based on his writing ‘Ethics,’ the study shows three different perspectives of moral values that Danjae had. First, Danjae presents moral values that fits the new people in the 20th century. The new people are equal and have the right to liberty. In this regard, he emphasizes that the public interest, not self-interest, should be promoted. Second, Danjae explains the ethics at the national level, including the personal level. Moral values are involved in not just distinguishing between right and wrong, but also understanding national interests. This viewpoint is associated with the survival of humanity, which sees something that inextricably linked to the survival is beneficial, and something that have no connection with the survival is harmful. Therefore, he justifies all means that contribute to national benefits. Last, Danjae shows anti-moral values of the ruined people. He believes that the evil morality which is favorable for the governing to rule over the governed should be overcome, in order for us to live on. At this point, he put forward the view of ‘evil morality=anti-moral values.’ While Danjae’s moral values have his subjective views, those values represent the desperate struggles of life and the last trial in challenging times. Danjae suggested the anti-moral values as a last resort to pass through a crisis.
