A Study on Lee Jin-ryong's anti-Japanese struggle

금년 2018년은 한말 의병장으로서, 독립운동가로서 걸출한 항일민족영웅으로 평가받고 있는 이진룡 장군이 순국한지 100주년이 되는 해이다. 그는 항일 의병활동이나 독립운동에 있어서 신출귀몰한 활약을 펼쳤고, 혁혁한 공을 세웠다. 이진룡은 국권이 상실되던 시기에는 나라를 지키기 위하여, 국권을 잃었을 때는 나라를 되찾기 위하여 목숨을 걸었다. 그는 자신의 생명보다 국가공동체와 민족공동체의 생명을 중시하였다. 그런 면에서 그는 ‘초과의무’의 화신이었고, 우리 역사의 ‘빛나는 별(shining star)’이 되었다. 본 논문의 목적은 문무를 겸한 이진룡의 의병투쟁과 독립투쟁의 활약상을 분석하며, 국내는 물론 중국 동북지역과 노령의 연해주를 넘나들며 나라를 지키고자, 또 나라를 되찾고자 자신의 몸을 희생시킨 ‘초과의무’의 정신의 구현의 의미를 살피는 데 있다. 여기서 말하는 초과의무란 공동체를 위하여 구태여 자신이 책임지지 않아도 될 의무를 지는 것을 의미한다.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the death for the country of Lee Jin-ryong, who was regarded as an outstanding anti-Japanese national hero. He made a remarkable contribution to activities of anti-Japanese volunteer soldiers and anti-Japanese independence movements. He risked his life in order to protect his country at a time when the country was losing sovereignty, and to regain his country at the time when the country lost its sovereignty. He valued the life of his country and of his people rather than his own. In that sense, he was the embodiment of ‘supererogation.’ That's why he became the 'shining star' of our history. The purpose of this paper is to analyze Lee Jin-ryong's struggles for anti-Japanese volunteer resistance and independence, and to examine the realization of his spirit of ‘supererogation.’
