Al-Ḥarīrī’s Maqāmāt, which appeared in the 11th century, is regarded as a symbolic model of the Maqāmāh genre, surpassing Maqāmāt of al-Hamadhani. The purpose of the present study is to examine reasons for this evaluation. In his Maqāmāt, al-Ḥarīrī (1054-1122) reached the highest level in Arabic rhetoric texts that had never been achieved before. Al-Ḥarīrī developed the stylistic forms of the Maqāmāh, including the use of saj', palindromes, and purposeful arrangements of the Arabic alphabet. He also developed the content of the Maqāmāh, which manifests itself in the development of the character and the expansion of the subject. Thus, while his Maqāmāt has laughter brought about by linguistic play, the content of the Maqāmāt is very dense. The rhetorical excellence and density of the content of Maqāmāt of al-Ḥarīrī set the Maqāmāh as a genre in the history of Arabic literature.
