The Perceptions of Cities and the Expressions of Emotions in Popular Songs: With a Focus on Lyrics in Cho Yong-pil's Songs

대중가요에서의 도시 인식과 정서 표현

이 글은 조용필 노랫말을 분석함으로써 대중가요에서의 도시 인식과 정서 표현 양상을 살펴본 것이다. 그동안 도시와 도시화에 대한 연구가 사회 각 분야에서 이루어진 바 있다. 그런데 그 어느 분야보다도일찍이 도시와 도시인의 삶을 노래한 대중가요 분야에서의 연구는 활성화하지 않았다. 따라서 이 글에서는 지난 50여 년간 조용필이 발표한 전곡을 전수 조사한 결과를 토대로 현대의 도시와 도시인을 제재로 한 노래를 선별한 후, 주제에 의해 ‘역사적 시공간으로서의 도시에 관한 인식을 보여 주는 노랫말’, ‘빛과 어둠이 공존하는 도시와 도시인의 속마음을 대변한 노랫말’, ‘도시에서의 사랑과 이별에 관한인식과 대중적 정서를 표현한 노랫말’로 나누어 분석해 보았다.

This study set out to examine the perceptions of cities and the patterns of emotional expressions in popular songs by analyzing lyrics in Cho Yong-pil's songs. There have been researches on cities and urbanization conducted by each field of society, but the field of popular songs, which sang about cities and the lives of city dwellers earlier than the other fields, has not seen active efforts on such researches. Based on the complete enumeration of songs released by Cho Yong-pil for the last 50 years, the present study thus selected his songs that were about cities and city dwellers and analyzed them according to the topics of “lyrics showing the perceptions of cities as historical time and space,” “lyrics representing what were in cities where light and dark coexist and in city dwellers,” and “lyrics expressing the perceptions of love and parting in cities and the popular sentiments.”
