The Structural Relationships between Tourism Major Students’ Mindset, Grit and Career Adaptability: Mediating Effects of Grit

Purpose - The purpose of this study aimed to explore 1) the relationships between mindset, grit and career adaptability, 2) the relationship between grit and career adaptability, and the 3) mediating effect of grit on the relationship between mindset on career adaptability. Design/Methodology/Approach - Online questionnaires were conducted for student tourism majors in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and 234 total valid samples were used for analysis. For the empirical analysis, simple, multiple, hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. Findings - First, the results of this study shows that mindset has a positive effect on grit and career adaptability. Second, grit has a positive effect on career adaptability. Third, the mediating effect of grit on the relationship between mindset on career adaptability was found. Research Implications - This study suggested that universities need to provide students coaching programs that can strengthen mindset and grit in tourism major students. Teachers must interact with students to recognize that hard work is worth more than talent. In addition, by recognizing the concept and importance of grit, it should be emphasized that difficulties encountered in college can be overcome through steady effort.
