대학의 계열별 글쓰기 수업에서의 과학 글쓰기 및 토론 활성화 방안

Facilitating Scientific Writing and Discussion in Undergraduate Scientific Writing Course: Cover Letters as a Classroom Communication Tool

과학기술의 사회적 역할이 증가함에 따라 과학 글쓰기에 관한 관심이 증가하고 있다.그런데 이공계 학생을 대상으로 한 과학 글쓰기나 발표·토론의 활성화를 위한 구체적인 교수 방안 및 수업 도구에 관한 연구는 드물다.전문적인 과학기술의 내용을소재로 본인의 주장을 명확하고 가독성 있게 서술하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다.특히, 다양한 전공의 학생을 대상으로 한 이공계 글쓰기 교육에서 특정 과학기술의 주제로효과적인 과학 글쓰기 및 토론을 지도하기 위해서는 그 과정에서 학생들이 경험할 수있는 다양한 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 방안에 관해 고민할 필요가 있다.본 연구에서는 이공계 글쓰기 수업에서 과학 글쓰기 증진 및 발표·토론의 활성화를 위해 과제소개서를 수업 도구로 활용하는 방안을 제안한다.과제소개서는 커버레터에 과학 커뮤니케이션의 요소를 응용한 것이다.본 연구에서 과학기술 글쓰기 수업을 수강하는 학생들은 논증 에세이와 함께 과제소개서를 작성하고 동료 학우들의 과제소개서를 읽은 뒤,이를 토대로 각자의 글에 대한 발표와 토론에 참여했다.연구 결과 과제소개서는 학생들이 자신의 글을 전체적으로 돌아보면서 연구 내용을 장악해 나가는 데 효과적이었다.또한 학생들은 설문 조사를 통해 과제 발표를 준비하고 토론에 대한 부담을더는 데 과제소개서가 도움이 되었다고 응답하였다.본 연구가 이공계 학생을 위한 효과적인 글쓰기 및 토론 활성화를 위한 구체적인 방안을 고안하는 데 기여할 수 있기를기대한다.

As the role of science in society becomes increasingly prominent, there is a rising recognition of the importance of scientific writing. However, in-class tools to teach scientific writing and effective communication to undergraduate science and engineering majors are still in need. It is not easy to clearly and effectively convey one’s argument on scientific issues based on technical knowledge through writing. It is even more difficult when you are teaching in an undergraduate scientific writing class setting where students of different science and engineering majors come together. To teach effective communication, we need to devise more specific methods to address various difficulties that students may encounter. In this study, we developed the “essay introduction letter” to facilitate scientific wrting and in-class discussions. Modelled on cover letters for academic journals, the essay introduction letter incorporates essential elements for effective science communication. In our study, students were required to write an essay introduction letter to present their argumentative essay assignment and read others’ essays before inclass discussions on each writing. We then analyzed the effects of using the letter by observation of in-class discussions and student surveys. Our findings suggest that students can more readily prepare their presentations and participate in meaningful discussions through writing and reading essay introduction letters. We hope that this study will contribute to devising specific methods to teach scientific writing and effective communication to undergraduate science and engineering majors.
