The Past, Present, and Future of Hwatu: Beyond the Controversy of Gambling and Japanese Color, to Localization and Globalization

화투는 패의 그림이 일본풍을 띠고 있고 도박적 성격이 강하다는 점에서 사회적으로 부정적인 인식을 받아왔다. 다른 한편으로 화투는 일상생활에서 친목을 도모하거나 여가로서 누구나 즐기는 국민 놀이로서 굳건히 자리를 지켜 왔으며, 최근에는 어르신들의 치매 예방을 위한 화투를 활용한 미술치료가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 이처럼 다면적인 양상을 보여 온 화투는 21세기를 맞아 또다시 달라진 모습을 우리 앞에 선보이려 하고 있다. 제주 모모 화투, 경주 꽃패놀이 등 국내 각 지역의 자연, 문화재 등과 결합하며 지역화, 현지화라는 시도가 이루어지고 있는가 하면, 이번에는 한국을 벗어나 해외를 향해 세계화라는 방향으로 나아가기 시작한 것이다. 영화 <미나리> 속 장면 덕분에 해외에서도 유명해진 화투가 전 세계 사람들이 함께 즐기는 놀이로서 자리를 잡게 되는 날이 올 것인가. 본 논문에서는 우리나라 화투 사용에 대한 과거와 현재를 살펴보고 미래의 활용 가능성을 탐색하였다. 화투라는 매체의 특성상 문헌고찰, 연구참여자 일대일 면담, 인터넷 자료수집 등 다양한 연구 자료와 방법을 혼합하여 전체상을 파악하고 고찰하였다.

Hwatu was a negative image in that the cards had Japanese-style picture and strong gambling character. On the other hand, Hwatu has maintained its status as a national game to promote friendship in leisure and daily life. Recently, art therapy using Hwatu has been actively performed to prevent dementia in the elderly. Hwatu, which has shown such a multifaceted aspect, is trying to show us a different side in the 21st century. While attempts are being made to localize it by combining with the nature and cultural properties of each region in Korea, it is now approaching people all over the world impressively through works such as the movie Minari. After successful localization, Hwatu is now in the stage of dreaming of globalization. In this paper, the past and present of Korean Hwatu were examined, and the future possibilities were explored. Due to the nature of the Hwatu, various research data and methods such as literature review, one-on-one interview with research participants, and Internet data collection were mixed to understand the overall picture.
