조선후기 송광사 중흥과 백암 성총(栢庵 性聰)

The revival of SonggwangTemple(松廣寺)and Baekam Seongchong(栢庵 性聰) in the late Joseon Dynasty

송광사가 한국의 대표적인 사찰의 가치와 위상을 지닐 수 있었던 것은 임진왜란 이후 폐허가 된 절을 재건하면서부터였다. 부휴 선수와 벽암 각성이 중건하면서 단절된 송광사의 수행 전통이 계승되었다. 부휴와 벽암의 제자들은 보조 지눌의 수행 정신을 계승하고자 했다. 특히 이들의 후손인 백암 성총은 조계총림의 중흥을 당부한 스승들의 유언을 잊지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 당대 불교계에 불교를 대중화시킨 인물이기도 하다. 그는 우선 송광사의 보조 지눌의 비와 ｢普照國師甘露塔碑｣를 건립하고 도난당한 보조국사의 사리를 찾아와 절에 안치하였다. 송광사가 지닌 불교사적 가치를 선양하고 계승하고자 한 것이었다. 백암은 1681년 난파선에 실려 있던 대장경을 간행하여 불교학의 발전뿐만 아니라 승가 교육이 체계화되는데 결정적인 역할을 하였다. 백암의 송광사 중흥을 위한 노력은 후학들에게 계승되었다. 무용(無用)→영해(影海)→풍암(楓巖)→묵암(黙庵)으로 이어지는 문손들은 보조유풍(普照遺風)을 빛냈고, 부휴와 벽암의 불교중흥 노력을 이어갔다.

The reason that Songgwangsa Temple was able to have the value and status of Korea's representative temple was the reconstruction of the ruined temple after the Japanese Invasion of Korea. Songgwangsa Temple has inherited the tradition of training that had been cut off with the restoration of Buhyu Seonsu(浮休 善修) and Byeokam Gakseong(碧巖 覺性). The disciples of BuHyu and Byeok-Am wanted to inherit the spiritual spirit of Bojo Jinul. In particular, their descendants, Baekam Seongchong, not only did not forget the last words of their teachers who asked for the restoration of Jogye Comprehensive Temples, but also popularized Buddhism in the Buddhist world of the time. First of all, he built a memorial for Bojo Jinul and the Gamro Stupa for the Honorable State Preceptor Bojo(普照國師甘露塔碑), which contain the history of Songgwang Temple, and then found the stolen relic of National Master BoJo and placed it in the temple. It was intended to promote and inherit the Buddhist historical values of Songgwang Temple. In 1681, Baekam published the Tripitaka Koreana which was carried on a shipwreck, which played a decisive role not only in the development of Buddhist studies but also in systematizing the education of the monks. efforts for the restoration of Songgwang Temple in Baekam were handed down to later generations. Descendants of Muyong(無用) → Yeonghae (影海) → Pungam (楓巖) → Mukam (黙庵) lit up the the Heritages of Master Bojo(普照遺風), and continued efforts to revitalize Buddhism in Buhyu and Byeokam.
