The purpose of this paper is to discuss the philosophical meaning of leisure in terms of cultural theory. For a theoretical background in this paper, the theory of culture industry of Frankfurt School theorists such as Ardorno and Horkheimer is reviewed. Based on critical theorists, this paper argues that leisure do not function as freedom, self-determination or self-fulfillment, but as a deception of mass people. Also, leisure practices became businesses and entertainment industries as music and cinema industries in capitalist society. Leisure industry, as a cultural industry, plays a role as an ‘ideological cement’ of a society to reduce social conflicts and also prevents political enlightenment of people. Finally, theoretical implications of critical theorists’ perspective on leisure practices are discussed.
