Misunderstandings and the Truth about the Swedish “Herd Immunity” Strategy

유럽의 여러 국가들은 코로나19(COVID-19) 초기방역에 실패해 많은 확진자와 사망자를 내고 대규모 봉쇄령이 내려졌다. 반면, 스웨덴은 사회구성원간 신뢰와 책임을 강조하며, 사회적 거리두기를 바탕으로 봉쇄 없는 대응을유지하고 있다. 스웨덴 정부와 공공보건청은 ‘집단면역’을 국가 대응 전략으로 추구한 적이 없다고 여러 차례 언급하였지만, 전세계적으로 ‘스웨덴은집단면역을 실험하고자 했다’는 비판을 받아왔다. 이 글에서는 문제가 되었던 스웨덴의 코로나19 초기 대응 전략을 소개하고, 그 문화적, 사회적 배경을설명해 독자가 스웨덴의 전략에 대해 이해하는 데 도움을 주고자 하였다.

Most countries in Europe failed to contain COVID-19, resulting in many confirmed cases and deaths. This has resulted in multiple European nations implementing large-scale lockdowns. Sweden on the other hand emphasized trust and civic responsibility to maintain social distancing. Due to the lack of lockdowns, Sweden has been criticized internationally for relying on a herd immunity strategy. This despite multiple statements from both the Swedish government and Public Health Agency stating that herd immunity has never been the national strategy. In this text the Swedish COVID-19 strategy will be explained, as well as some of the cultural & societal background which is necessary to understand it.
