거리 예술을 통해 본 정치적 주체화: 제이알(JR)의 얼굴 사진 프로젝트를 중심으로

Urban art and Political Subjectivation: Focusing on JR's Portrait Photography Project

2000년대 초반부터 거대 인물 초상 사진을 거리에 전시하는 프로젝트를진행하고 있는 제이알(JR)은 평범한 개인을 정치 담론 위로 끌어올리는 시민참여적 거리 예술을 펼치고 있다. 특정 직업, 계층, 연령, 성별 등 집단의정체성으로만 이해되던 개인의 얼굴을 거대 초상으로 극대화함으로써 대중의 일원일 뿐이었던 개인을 개성을 가진 주체로 드러나게 한다. 이러한 제이알의 작업은 익명으로 존재하던 대중이 예술 행위를 통해 자신을 드러내고담론의 주체가 될 수 있음을 보여주는 사례로서 랑시에르의 미학 정치의주요 개념인 정치적 주체화와 맞닿아 있다. 본 연구는 제이알의 얼굴 사진프로젝트 사례를 통해 거리 예술이 갖는 실천적 함의를 주체화 개념을 통해살펴보고자 한다. 랑시에르는 정치를 주체들의 문제 혹은 주체화 양식들의문제라 언급하며 평범한 개인들의 정치적 주체화를 현대 사회의 정치적 실천방안으로 제시한다. 제이알의 작품에 등장하는 개인들은 집단의 정체성이나계급성 등 자신에게 부여된 의미를 탈피하거나 전복시키는 경험을 통해 특정정체성을 가진 집단의 일원이 아닌 고유한 개성을 가진 존재로 사회에 목소리를 낸다. 이는 랑시에르가 말한 정치적 주체화 과정의 사례로서 예술을통한 정치, 예술이 갖는 실천적 속성을 보여준다.

Since the early 2000s, JR has been working on a project to display portraits of giant figures on the street and engaging in citizen-participatory street art projects that make ordinary individuals express their voices on political discourses. JR take pictures of anonymous citizens and print out them in huge size. By showing individual's face pictures in the street, he tries to make people recognized as a subject who has its own personality and experiences while they usually have been only understood as a group identity, such as a specific occupation, class, age, and gender. JR's work is in contact with Rancière's aesthetic politics as an example of the politics of visibility in which the anonymous public reveals themselves through artistic acts and becomes the subject of discourse. In accordance with Rancière's discussion referring to politics as a problem of subjects or a problem of subjectivization styles, this study analyze characteristics of JR's artistic activity as a new aesthetic practice case that changes everyday life, JR uses his portrait projects as a strategy to illuminate the lives of marginalized or distorted communities. It seeks to discover the political implications of street art activities by viewing it as a process of political subjectivization through the subversion of group identity.
