The Cause-Effect Relationship of Conflict in Tourism Development

The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between causes and effects of conflict taken place during the tourism development process. Through the review of previous studies, four common sources of conflicts were identified: goal divergence, competition for scarce resources, role discordance, and ineffective communication. Conflict outcomes can be regarded as the result of interaction between stakeholders and can be measured in terms of quality of the relationship among stakeholders. Data for this study were collected from local residents who are the major stakeholders of local tourism development. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. The results of this study showed the nature of the relationship between sources and outcomes of conflicts. First, sources of conflict were related to levels of conflict. Competition for scarce resources, ineffective communication, and goal divergence had positive effect on levels of conflict. Second, as level of conflict increases, quality of relationship among stakeholders was deteriorated. The level of conflict had negative effects on the quality of relationship measured in terms of satisfaction and trust level.
