Bernard Lonergan's Notion of Dialectic and Self-Appropriation as the Process of Intellectual Conversion

개인과 사회에서 갈등은 이해관계가 충돌하는 상황을 의미한다. 역사학의 진보에 따라서, 변증적 맥락과 지평들 사이의 긴장 관계를 파악하게 되었고, 다양한 지평과 관점으로 갈등을 인식하게 되었다. 로너간은 창의적인 초월적 방법을 적용하여, “변증”의 맥락에서 갈등의 일차적 원인을 상반된 지평이라고 진단한다. 로너간은 상반된 지평의 근원을 인간의 사고방식을 심원하게 한정하는 종교관, 윤리적 입장, 그리고 명시적 또는 암묵적 인지 이론의 유무라고 지적한다. 인지 이론은 인간 주체의 의식-지향적, 인지적 활동의 결과인 앎을 객관화하는 방법이며, 동시에 인간 주체의 앎을 자기 것으로 체화하는 과정이기도 하다. 인지적 자기-체화의 목표는 지성적 회심이다. 로너간은 그리고 지성적 회심은 도덕적 회심과 종교적 회심의 열매로 가능하고, 도덕적 회심은 회심의 정점인 종교적(영적) 회심의 열매로 가능하다고 설명한다. 우리는 인지적 자기-체화를 통해서 자기-지식의 진정한 객관성을 발견할 수 있다. 그리고 진정한 인지 이론과 인지적 자기-체화는 우리의 역사학적 갈등을 치유하는 수행 방법이다.

Conflicts refers to dialectical situations in which there are individual and group different and opposed interests. Since the progress of historical studies, scholars have become aware of the dialectical tensions between horizons of thought and their contexts so that they recognize conflicts in the different points of view and various horizons. Lonergan’s transcendental method contends that the opposed horizon is the initial cause of conflict in a context that the calls “Dialectic”. Lonergan points out that the main sources of opposed horizons are an implicit or explicit cognitional theory, an ethical stance, and a religious outlook that profoundly modify one’s mentality. His cognitional theory is a method for the objectification of one’s knowledge that are the results of one’s conscious intentional activities. And it is also a process of self-appropriation in which one appropriates one’s own knowing. Intellectual conversion is the purpose of self-appropriation. Intellectual conversion, in his view, is normally achieved by the fruits of moral and religious conversion. Through cognitive self-appropriation, one can discover authentic and objective self-knowledge. Authentic self-appropriation with a genuine cognitional theory becomes the method and rule for conflict resolution.
