대학 영어 회화 수업 학습자들의 번역기 사용에 대한 인식 관련 연구

The Perception of the Use of the English Automatic Translation among University Students in English Conversation Classes

본 연구는 S 대학 영어 회화 수업 학습자의 자동번역기 사용에 대한 인식을 살피는 데에 목적이 있다. 연구를 위해 초급, 중급, 고급 영어 회화 수업 학습자 60명이 설문조사에 참여하였다. 설문 결과, 59명 학습자가 영어 학습 과정에서 자동번역기를 사용하고, 파파고와 구글 번역기를 가장 많이 사용하였다. 자동번역기를 사용하는 목적은 다양하게 나타났는데 주로 빠른 문장 해석과 영작, 문법 오류 등을 확인하기 위해서였다. 학습자 대부분은 자동번역기를 남용하지 않고 필요할 때만 사용해야 한다고 인식하고 있었고 효과적인 자동번역기 사용법을 위한 다양한 의견을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서 살펴본 대학 영어 회화 학습자들의 자동번역기 사용에 대한 인식과 학습자들이 제안한 효과적인 자동번역기 사용법은 향후 자동번역기의 사용에 대한 구체적인 가이드라인과 다양한 교수법을 모색해 나아가는 데 가치 있는 자료가 될 것으로 기대한다. 대학 영어 글쓰기 수업에서의 자동번역기에 대한 대학생들의 경험과 인식에 관한 연구가 최근 활발하게 진행되어 오면서 본 논문은 대학 영어 회화 수업에서 초급, 중급, 고급 학생들의 번역기 사용에 대한 인식을 다룬 논문이라는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.

This study aims to examine the perception of the use of English automatic translation among university students and how they perceive its effectiveness in English Conversation classes. The participants of this study are the students who took the researcher's English Conversation classes in the spring semester of 2022 at S University. After taking the English level test, 20 students from each beginner, intermediate, and advanced class were assigned to English Conversation courses according to their English level. As a result of the survey, the majority of students from each level used Papago and Google Translate to translate their writing scripts, search for words, and check for grammatical errors, and most students showed a high dependency on their automatic translation apps. Second, all three levels were aware of both the negative and positive impacts of their use of automatic translation in their writing process. Third, most students admitted that they didn’t want to overuse these applications, but rather only when necessary. This study is meaningful in that a follow-up study should be further conducted on how educators should give proper guidance to students when it comes to using automatic translation in English Conversation classes in a university setting.
