조선후기 고소설 속 남성 영웅의 한 양상과 그 의미

An Aspect of a Male Hero in Classical Novels in the Late Joseon Dynasty and Its Meaning: Focusing on Leemanyeongjeon

본고는 조선후기 고소설 <리만영젼>의 남성주인공 리만영이 보이는 영웅성이 결핍된 남성 영웅의 특징을 살피고 능력이 부족한 영웅으로서 리만영이 갖는 의미를 살피고자 하였다. 리만영은 지략(智略)과 무력(武力)이 부족하여 죽거나 적에게 포로로 잡힌다. 리만영이 겪는 일상 또는 전쟁에서의 위기는 그 아내 곽 낭자의 활약을 통해 해결된다. 리만영은 영웅적 능력은 부족하지만 영웅 일대기에 충실한 삶을 살고 있으며 그 아내 곽 낭자의 영웅적 활약은 리만영의 영웅 일대기를 완성하는 일부분에 머문다. 또한 곽 낭자의 활약을 통해 완성되는 것은 유교적 삶의 방식, 충(忠), 열(㤠) 등 유교적 덕목으로 당대 사회가 인정하는 공적 가치에 해당한다. 작품은 송사나 군담에서 활약하는 여성 인물의 모습을 그렸지만 그 활약의 결과는 당대 사회가 인정하는 유교적이고 공적인 가치의 실현으로 여성 인물의 활약은 결국 기존 체계를 공고히 하는데 기여하는데 그친다. 리만영은 이상적(理想的) 영웅과는 다른, 부족한 면도 있고 타인의 도움을 받기도 하는 현실성이 강화된 영웅 캐릭터의 면모를 보인다. 리만영이 보이는 영웅적 능력의 결핍, 실수나 오판, 그로 인한 위기는 독자에게 공감의 요소로 작동할 수 있었을 것이며 남편이 겪는 문제를 아내가 해결하는 것은 비슷한 시기 다른 작품들에도 다수 등장할 정도로 당대 소설 향유층들에게는 익숙한 현실이자 스토리였을 것이다. 고소설 <리만영젼>은 조선후기에 창작·향유되었을 것으로 추정되는 작품으로 영웅소설의 쇠퇴기에 상업적·통속적 영향을 받아 창작된 희작 또는 습작으로서 가부장제가 약화되는 현실 속에서 자력으로 가부장제를 유지하는 것에 한계를 느낀 남성들이 기존 체제 유지 소망을 유능한 아내 캐릭터에 의존하여 구현한 한 양상을 보여주는 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

This paper tried to examine the characteristics of a male hero who lacked heroism, as seen in the male protagonist Lee Man yeong in the old novel Leemanyeongjeon in the late Joseon Dynasty, and to examine the meaning of Lee Man yeong as a hero who lacks ability. Lee Man Young lacks resourcefulness and force, so he either dies or is taken prisoner by the enemy. Lee Man Young's daily life or crises in war are resolved through the activities of his wife, Kwak Nang ja. Although Lee Man Young lacks heroic abilities, he lives a life faithful to the hero's biography, and his wife, Kwak Nang ja's heroic performances are only a part of completing Lee's heroic biography. In addition, what is completed through the activities of Kwak Nang ja corresponds to the public values recognized by the contemporary society as Confucian virtues such as the Confucian way of life, Chung(loyalty), Yeol(devotion). Although the work depicts female figures who are active in lawsuit and military story, the result of their activities is the realization of the Confucian and public values recognized by the society of the time, and the female characters' activities end up contributing to consolidating the existing system. Lee Man Young is different from an ideal hero and shows the side of a hero character whose reality has been strengthened, with a lack of aspects and receiving help from others. Lee Man Young's lack of heroic ability, mistakes or misjudgment, and the resulting crisis could have worked as an element of empathy for the reader, and the wife's resolution of the husband's problems was so contemporary that it appeared in many other works at the same time. It must have been a familiar reality and story for those who enjoyed novels. The old novel Leemanyeongjeon is a novel that is supposed to have been created and enjoyed in the late Joseon Dynasty. It is a novel that was created under commercial and popular influence during the decline of heroic novels. It can be said that it is a novel that shows an aspect of men who felt the need to maintain the existing system by relying on the character of their capable wife.
