『숨에 관하여』는 의학서이면서도 자연철학적 접근법뿐 아니라 수사학적 연설의 형식도 이용하고 있다는 점에서 흥미로운 작품이다. 이 논문에서 『숨에 관하여』를 통해 기원전 5세기경 고대 그리스에서 자연철학과 의학의 관계, 수사학과 의학의 관계, 그리고 『숨에 관하여』의 의학사상과 히포크라테스 학파의 일반적 사상의 관계를 두루 살펴보았다. 먼저 히포크라테스의 전집 속에는 자연철학의 영향을 받아 우주와 인간에 동일한 법칙이 적용된다는 확신 속에 우주론과 의학을 접목하려는 작품들이 있는데, 『숨에 관하여』는 그런 작품 유형에 속하는 대표적인 글임을 밝혔다. 그리고 수사학적인 측면에서 볼 때 『숨에 관하여』는 특히 고르기아스의 『헬레네 찬미』를 모델로 삼아 작성된 과시연설(epideiktikos logos)의 형식을 갖고 있음을 밝혔다. 기원전 5세기경에 고대 그리스에서 의사들에게 수사학은 의사로서의 직업 활동을 위해 절실히 필요했다는 점을 고려하더라도 히포크라테스 전집 속에 포함된 의학서가 수사학적으로 정교하게 구성되었다는 점은 꽤 흥미로운 사실이다. 이로 인해 『숨에 관하여』의 저자가 고르기아스처럼 수사술에 능한 소피스트가 아니냐는 견해들이 있다. 그래서 저자를 소피스트로 보는 것이 옳은지도 살펴보았다. 그런데 저자가 히포크라테스 학파의 의사인지 소피스트인지를 알아보기 위해 그의 의학 사상도 검토해보았다. 그 결과 저자는 소피스트가 아니고, 그렇다고 히포크라테스라 보기도 힘들며, 히포크라테스 전통 속에 있던 의사로 보는 것이 적절하다는 결론을 내렸다.
On breaths is an interesting work in that it adopts not only natural philosophical approach but also a form of rhetorical speech even though it is a medical treatise. In this paper, I consider the relationship between natural philosophy, rhetoric and medicine in 5th century B.C. through the analysis of On breaths. Since On breaths is a rhetorically elaborate work, there are opinions that the author might be a sophist skilled in rhetoric like Gorgias. Therefore, I also considered whether it is correct to regard the author as a sophist. For these considerations I develop three arguments. First, I show that the author of On breaths is the philosophical physician with the conviction that the same laws apply to the universe and humans under the influence of natural philosophy. Second, I show that On breaths has the form of an epideiktikos logos, modeled after Gorgias' Encomium of Helen. Third, I conclude that the author is not a sophist, but a doctor in the Hippocratic tradition.
