이 연구는 <숙향전>의 대중성에 주목하여, <숙향전>의 문학적 의미를 살펴 보고자 했다. ‘대중성’이‘시대의 철학’을 보여주는 동시에 침묵하는 다수 사이에서 어떠한 정서와 세계관이 우세한지를 보여준다는 점에서 의미있는 작업이라고 판단했기 때문이다. 결과적으로, <숙향전>은 대중성을 취하기 위한서사 전략을 통해 독자의 긴장과 이완을 유도하며, 독자로 하여금 주어진 기존 인습에 순응하게 하는표면적 주제와 함께 당대 사회가 지니고 있는 이데올로기와 젠더의 문제를 역으로 보여주는 이면적 주제를 함의하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This study focused on the popularity of <Sukhyangjeon> and tried to examine the literary meaning of <Sukhyangjeon>. This is because 'popularity' shows the 'philosophy of the times' and at the same time shows what kind of sentiment and worldview prevail among the silent majority. <Sukhyangjeon> has repeated readers' tension and relaxation through narrative strategies to gain popularity. In addition, it contains a dual message that implies both the superficial theme that makes the reader conform to the existing conventions and the hidden theme that reverses the ideology and gender issues of the contemporary society.
